Hey guys, I have a run of the mill clematis (Lowes) that bloomed beautifully a few weeks ago, but the blooms are now gone...If I pruned it would it perk up and bloom some more or does it bloom only for a short while. I see other folks' blooming in their yards, but I don't know if this is their first or second go round.
Thanks for your info!!!

Yes, prune immediately after your Clematis is done flowering. It sounds like you have a Group 2 Clematis that blooms in late Spring/early Summer. It should be pruned lightly, given more fertilizer (Rose or Tomato) which works great and then add more mulch around your Clematis. It probably will reward you with some more blooms during the Summer.
Shirley gave yall some great info...Jeanne
don't wait. i am pruning early and hard this year, as blooms wane not waiting till they stop. late blooms depend on this. if you wait till they stop it is too late to get a good showing in late summer. prune early, hard and fertilize immediately and sept will feel like spring.
Thanks for the info, guys. I still haven't pruned mine yet, mainly because I'm not sure how to do it. I'll get some info and get it done. I just hope it's not too late to get some more blooms
take some scizzors or garden nippers.
place them right above a place on the stem where leaves brand out to the side.
cut right there.
do lower, do it again.
leave about two of those places, or leaf axils from the ground.
you did it.
There are so many stems on there...do you mean I have to nip each one individually? Couldn't I just whack at it??? lol
you can whack it down. if you want it to look nice you can then go back to the top of each stem and cut it appropriately just above a leaf axil ( or node). this helps the plant decide to put out new shoots from the stem and looks nicer than the stick of stem above the nodes.i just did this yesterday to a jackmanii that needed relief. it is faster.
Thanks for the info Niobe....
