Hi all. We've done a lot of work on the front already, but we're ready for more.
We'd love to get rid of much, if not all of the grass. We have sandy
soil and without underground sprinklers it is hard to keep the grass
looking decent in July (and we're surrounded by others with underground sprinklers!). In fact, I pretty much rely on mother nature to water :)
The yews should stay, I like them there. Otherwise I'm pretty open to new ideas on how to "arrange" the yard. And that includes the huge junipers on the left side. They are hiding a large utility box on the property line, so I need to hide that somehow. But the junipers are getting a little large (though they are currently serving as a sleeping are for a garter snake: http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/199257/).
My basic idea is to have a half moon or less of grass towards the
sidewalk, with perennials and shrubs taking up the rest towards the
house. But that is kind of boring (maybe because that is the only idea I can come up with after all these years!), and would appreciate any other ideas. I'm a zone 4 so I don't expect everyone to have specific plant ideas, but I'd love ideas in general and I'll find specific plants later.
Other Notes: It is about 26' from walkway to house/porch. The walk to the door is a bit hidden here but is in front of the porch, and there's a tiny bed between the porch and the walk (about 2' deep/wide). The yard is about 46' from driveway to line, though more like 35' to the juniper bed. I face E-SE. So not a lot of space for large plants, but good enough to play with.
Thank you!
