And I must say, I am really impressed. He shipped them in their pots and did not lose one speck of soil!! Took me half an hour to unwrap them!!
They are in 4" pots and are so well grown, each plant has several 6 or more inch long vines...I just can't believe it. Makes me wish I had ordered them all, but I kept it to 3 as an experiment. Going to be calling him for the rest very soon.
I got:
H. multiflora(complete with buds!!)
H. New guinea "red"...very cool leaves, kinda striped.
H. Imperialis...huge leaves and very furry, front and back.
Pike Lake order arrived!!!
GREAT plants!!! I think your H. imperialis will turn out to be either H. magnifica, H. calycina or H. aff. albiflora from the leaves!!! Definitely not H. imperialis. I like the leaves on the NG 'red'...do you have a photo of the flowers???
Carol
No bloom photos, sorry:(
ceedub(Christine) has these same plants from him and believes the New Guinea red is H. Globulosa and the Imperialis is H. calycina...
she has photos posted of hers here:
http://www.myhoyas.com/Hoya%20globulosa%20min.htm
Funny name for H. globulosa.
Anyway...they are really nice looking plants and H. calycina is lovely!!!!
Thanks!! I can't stop staring at them...LOL
NOTE: H. calycina seems to like to get mealies....those fuzzy leafed things are like that!!!
ackkk...thanks Carol, I'll keep a close watch for them. I still can't get over how nice these plants are...and I can't stop petting the Imperialis(Calycina).
Don't you mean H. calycina (imperialis)?
Nice looking plants threegardeners. I had been tempted to order some from there but never got around to it. Now I think I have just about everything he sells so probably never will.
I was wondering about the imperialis that's really calycina. It looks a lot like a cutting I got in the recent hoya swap. It was labeled imperialis and I was thrilled because I have it on my wish list. Carol....does imperialis have fuzzy leaves?
Sandy
Imperialis leaves look NOTHING like the leaves on H. calycina. I think Christina's website at www.myhoyas.com can illustrate that. H. calycina has very long longish hairs which make the leaves look almost grey...while H. imperialis has shorter hairs....the margins are different, the growth is different etc.....
Well, it looks like my imperialis is calycina too. I already have one of those from you Carol....from the hoya swap of 2006. Having never seen imperialis leaves I didn't really have any reason to doubt the name. Rats.....I must say I'm rather disappointed. I'll have to put imperialis back on my wish list. I wonder if the person who sent to me got hers from Pike Lake. Too bad he wouldn't correct his labels so that all these plants circulating in Canada wouldn't be mislabeled. I know Christine has a list of Pike Lake plants and their probable names.
Here's the list of Pike Lake's hoyas that are incorrectly labelled. Despite the errors in labelling, LeeAnne is right that his hoyas are amazingly healthy and incredibly well packaged for shipping.
H. cinamomifolia is actually H. potsii
H. New Guinea Red is actually H. globulosa
H. New Guinea White is actually H. magnifica
H. darwini is actually H. DH70 (aka tsangii, etc., etc.)
H. imperialis is actually H. callycina
H. incana is actually H. australis aff australis (or maybe sp australis, its leaves are fuzzy)
H. minima is actually H. serpens
H. shepherdii/longifolia is actually H. shepherdii
H purpureo fusca is actually H. pubicalyx pink silver
Yes, Sandy, I think you do have H. calycina; when I discovered that that's what I had, I was initially annoyed, but then I saw a picture of H. calycina's flowers, and it didn't matter anymore. You'll eventually get it Sandy, and it won't grow as well as H calycina does! Well, okay, mine don't anyway...lol...
Lovely hoyas LeeAnne!! Congrats!!
Christine
I'm not annoyed with having another calycina. I haven't sent a piece of that to my trading partner yet because my first plant isn't growing very fast, so it's great.
I have heard several times that the owner of Pike Lake is a lovely man and that the plants he sells are wonderful. But if you're pretty positive in your correct identification of his plants because you've had them flower.....have you told him? I would think someone running a nursery would be interested in selling people correctly labeled plants. Oh boy.....I can't believe I'm writing this since I don't know how many times have I read that that's not true. Never mind but I will say that if I ordered cinnamomifolia, darwinii and purpureo-fusca and I already had pottsii, DS-70 and pubicalyx 'Pink Silver'...I'd be more than a bit disappointed.
And threegardeners...you probably don't have multiflora. Ewdy told me her multiflora from Pike Lake was identified by David Liddle as Cyrtoceros floribunda because that's where mine originally came from too.
Sandy
Yes, he's been told that these hoyas are incorrectly identified; he's old school though, and feels his customers would be confused if he started relabelling them. That, and I don't think he wants to redo his inventory list....
While I have potsii, the potsii (cinamomifolia) I got from him is completely different, so I wasn't disappointed with that one. Most of the plants I got from him were when I started out collecting so it didn't matter at the time. Unfortunately, the best we can do with him is be armed with the knowledge, in return for amazingly healthy plants.
C.
Wow, I went to work last night and you were all busy!!
He mentioned when I called him that he'll probably close in a year or so, could have something to do with not wanting to relabel everything.
Thanks Christine for the name help again, I sure am pleased with these plants. Canada needs another supplier of good, healthy Hoyas ^_^
I've picked up the phone a few times already wanting to call him and order some more. Even DH was impressed with these...if the sun ever comes out again I'm going to try for a few closer, better shots of these leaves.
I like that Imperialis Lin!!
Mine is actually really H. callycina...gotta get a pic. of these fuzzy leaves.
hmm ... I'm wondering about yours being H. magnifica. I got a cutting of H. magnifica in the Spring DL order and am very pleased it is doing so well and putting out growth.
My H. magnifica has very soft leaves and the new stems are quite fuzzy and soft too. Here's a pic of my H. magnifica from DL. I think it looks different from your plant.
LOL, we cross posted. I see that Carol did say yours might be H. calycina.
You got some great looking plants!
Just googled for Pike Lake and see they don't have a website. :(
I saw you posted a comment in Garden Watchdog: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/2747/
He doesn't do online sales, or anything for that matter...he said he's too old, him and the wife are retired and just started the business as a "hobby"...said it's getting to be too much for them already...a shame, such beautiful plants too.
If he and his wife are retired and think it's getting to be too much you might want to be on the look out for a close out sale! Might be able to pick up some more gorgeous plants at great prices! They really do look like nice sized and very healthy plants you got.
He called today to see if I had received them yet and if I was happy with them...don't tell DH but I promptly put in another order ^_^
Ooooh ... Lucky you!
^_^ .... I'll never tell!
There IS an interesting difference in the leaves of my H. calycinas and H. magnificas: calycinas seem to grow with a bluer/grey green and the magnificas are definitely green green...on the light side....altho' as i always say...color is not a determining factor. Calycinas also have slighly recurved margins....
explain "slightly recurved" please?
The 'margins" are the edges of the leaves. 'Recurved' has the same meaning as in explaining what corollas do - the corollas 'curve' backwards....and the margins of the leaves that have recurved margins have margins that bend/curve down towards the underside of the leaf. Some have it very pronounced others just slightly....
Oh, that is so cool! Is that the H. calycina? That is really fuzzy! I had no idea any hoya had really furry/fuzzy leaves like that.
That's the Calycina!!
Even his stems are that fuzzy. He has water spots on some of his older leaves, I have no idea how to get rid of them, tried a damp cloth but I'm afraid to rub on account of the fuzz.
The new growth stems on my magnifica are soft and fuzzy, as are the undersides of the leaves. That calycina is really cool. I just added it to my very long "wish" list! LOL.
There are only 5 photos of H. calycina in PF: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57738/I hope you will consider uploading that photo as well as one of the whole plant.
threegardners, I use lemon juice and a soft rag to wash away water spots and it shines the leaves very nicely with no damage. I've been doing this for years also on my other houseplants. JO
