A few pictures of Koi thrashing about in the pond/

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

I was sitting on the side of my pond just gazing into the water, when all of a sudden, SWOOSH, here come the Koi !

It scares me as they get so close to the only shallow part of the pond, and then they push the female right out into the grass! I just know when I am not there, the darn herons will have a BIG DINNER :(

Within minutes the water is all murkey from their thrashing about.

Love all the koi pics! Looks like lots of fish are enjoying summer:)

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

Geesh, I just now got back! Great pics of the Koi, BeaHive and Bsavage :) I have lots of fish in the pond. Koi, minnows, sunfish, and of course those nasty bullheads :( I have been finding massive groups of the smaller bullheads, but I also managed to catch two adults, yuck! I have tried to find some Koi eggs, but where are they? I have a small net and I have gleaned where I saw them spawning, but nuttin! This is the first day I have not seen them at the only part of the shallow pond, thrashing all over the place! I have read that they will spawn until July! I also picked up a few pots from the same area where they have been and put them in filled with pond water kiddie pools, just in case I get lucky and some of their eggs hatch, THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL! Any tips to finding those clear Koi eggs?

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

We didn't do anything but let nature take it's course... didn't remove eggs, didn't segregate babies... so far, it's working... we have LOTS of babies of varying sizes. But I think they have lots of places to hide in our pond, and the big fish are VERY well fed...

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

Well Jeepers, I have looked at all three babies and none of them have the barbs on the sides of their mouth! I did not use a magnifying glass but I did use my $1.00 glasses, LOL They are born with the barbs I thought I read?
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, not fair, not fair ;(

Don't despair Tootsie! I know that Koi and goldfish will interbreed but do not think koi will with anything else. I have six Koi and this year they were old enough to spawn. But I had one #$%^ goldfish that managed to get in there too and when I started seeing babies I drained the pond and got the goldfish and babies out. I put four of them in the indoor aquarium and they are not about an inch and a half long now. You have to look VERY closely to see the barbels but they are there.

Tootsie put them into a glass jar (like a glass jelly jar) that will magnify them. Then you can see if they have barbels. You might need your glasses too...lol

Here's a picture of someone else "monster sized" koi. He was very flirty with me!

I have to try and get a picture of two of my "crazier" koi. One will climb up on rocks to eat any food that misses the water. She/he will go pretty far up a nearly dry rock and will push any and all fish out of the way to get it all. Is that as weird to you all as it is to me?

Another fish (a crazy black one) will actually follow food into the filter and stay there and eat and then swim out. I have seen this nutball do this since the first day he was in the pond but today I nearly fell into the pond when I lifted the fake rock cover to check the basket and he was in there and jumped up and then swam out. He stopped and looked right at me as if it was a normal thing in both daily routines. What a nut!

Another fish will immediately go for the food when it sees me coming and will eat a lot of it but as it spreads out in the current the fish then swims back to the filtration and just waits there for the food to arrive and it eats it as if this is a planned thing (maybe it is . . .). I've seen this fish do this on three occasions so I am starting to think there is some brain cells inside that head figuring out the best way to eat a lot without too much effort. This is my largest and lead fish (inconjunction with the rock eating fish).

Ok, now I am going back and catch the "fish" and I just happen to have a grape jelly jar in my hand :) Also I brought with me a magnifying glass, LOL My pond is about 150 X 80, and alot deeper than ever as we have had so much rain! I have found tons of baby bullheads tho, and started wipping them out with the only thing I had, THE POOL SKIMMER NET. Off I go to the pond, be back in awhile :) Hope everyone is having a good day?? It is suppose to be in the 80's today, THE LASTDOG DAYS OF SUMMER, a newsman said today, LOL

Good luck with your "fishing"!

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

Tootsie: Bullheads=frogs right? Your pond is a natural pond that had wildlife in it and you added your koi-is that correct? What things do you have to do differently with keeping up with your fish and your pond in comparison to someone with a man made pond?

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

It's also a good day for getting all wet and then plopping yourself into the water...just to cool off!!

Happy Hunting.

Hi Mothermole, sorry, but we have another MOLE just getting into my flower gardens and making tunnels :( The Bullheads I mentioned are those, UGH, AWFUL, CREEPY, FISH! They are a muddy color and have long wormy looking things growing out of their mouth. The are very sharp, and UGLY, and can STING YOU, if they wish!! I have another kiddie pool with water plants in it, so I might take everything out and just see if there are any baby koi, or goldfish :) It is in the 80's today and suppose to have bad storms :( We need the water tho. Since I water all my plants with the pond water, I just might plant my upside down mater plants, and hang them over the pond on hooks?
Hope everyone is having nice warm temps??
