has anyone here ever had an allergic reaction to Brug ?
If so please respond.
I have developed a rash on my face and arms.
Maybe that's the truth to the myth, about why we are not to nap beneath it.
It also could be a rash from contact with dust from chili peppers, or any number of other things in my garden. I always wear long sleeves and gloves when I trim it.Just wanted to check with you people in the know.

possible allergy
I haven't heard anything like that from brugs yet..
I was getting bit by something out in the garden... I have no clue what it was.. but my arms and shoulders were terrible! Nothing on my face... knock on wood.. LOL
I never saw anything on me.. I am still at a loss as to what's biting me.. I hate it!
I sit every evening under my Suess as she opens... for years now...maybe Iv'e developed a sap allergy? Still I did clean up a mess of old chili peppers..
yours sounds like the classic "no see um"

Thank you! I bet that's it! I have been going crazy trying to find out what it is!
About your reaction.. it's got me puzzled.. If it were me, I'd see if a leaf, or bloom pollen or whatever you suspect it is and see if it caused irritation on a tiny spot on my arm or something.. I'd have some Benadryl handy.. I am not recommending it.. but that's what I'd probably try..
Annie.. sorry you have that awful rash..... did you have the long sleeves..etc. on when you were in the pepper dust? have no clue as to possible brug allergies... just know they are very poisoness.. but I don't even wear gloves when handling them.. no problem... I don't think..LOL

I am very allergic to the Nightshade family of plants, and Brugs are Nightshades, aren't they?
It's a little known but not uncommon allergy. The drug companies don't have pills for this allergy, so we don't hear about it. Other nightshades are: Tomato, Bell pepper(any pepper!) white potatoes, eggplant, tobacco, and locoweed. Lots of ornamental flowers are nightshades, petunias for one.
The white tissue that holds muscle together and to the bone gets inflamed. I thought I was 100 years old when I was twenty! Felt like a truck had run over me, stiff and sore and stabbing pains where my leg bones fit into my hip bones. I didn't walk, I hobbled, at twenty years old!
I was a suscriber to Organic Gardening magazine, and they had one little letter in the back one time from an arthritis doctor who discussed this allergy. He noticed his gardening patients were worse off in the fall. He found the allergy, and told is people, stop eating this stuff! 10% cleared up from pain completely, 80% had varying success, and 10% had no change.
I tried no nightshades for a week, and completely cleared up-- no more pain! I was eating homefries with bell peppers, french fries with ketchup, Italian and Mexican dishes, wowee.
I get a bit of a rash on my arms if I brush against the leaves very much. Guess I need to start wearing long sleeves!
Cheers,
Mm
i have search high and low for days, these links are the closest i can find on the subject http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/538404/ , http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/532732/
perhaps not exactly what u are looking for, but info is good to know, specially for newbies.
MaVe...
TY again for sharing your expertice and knowlege... It sure helps a newbiw like me, get the info I need!!
Becky
u're very welcome Becky.
btw... i do not use Epsom salt for foliar feeding. ES leaves white residue on the leaves. my purpose in foliar feeding is clean the leaves and refresh the plants from dust and heat. am afraid the white residue of ES will clog the leaves pores. plants leaves absorb nutrients from the sun, and provide nourishment for the plant. it will take lots of water to remove the white residue. jmo, everyone has their own way of caring for their plants.
That makes sense to me MaVe.... I think they put a little in the "recipe" that so many use, but I haven't used that yet. Sometimes I get so confused cause everyone's way of doing it sounds good to me..lol
Becky,
nothing is written in stone. u have to do ur own experiment to learn what will work for u. not all formula u see or read is guaranteed to work for u or me. u have to remember, we have different atmospheric pressure, altitude of where we are located, soil are different, so are our temperatures.
having said that, this is the very reason why i do lots of experiments and research ... to learn what will work for me and the plants i care for. notes i have collected is but a guideline to give me idea on what to experiment or work on so plants will tribe. i hate to see plants die which is why i continuously do research to learn about products that are organic and how to apply them accdgly to my plant/s.
i have shared and will continue to share what i learn and pass it on. try the info i shareor whatever it is u find; use weaker formula at the start, so ur plants will gradually adjust. i wish u luck in ur venture into the brug world.

Ty again MaVe... you are so right about different conditions affecting the different plants. It is amazing to me how the same plant can do differently only being a few miles apart ( talking about my cousins plants)... heck even only feet apart. Even in only that short of a distance there are still the same "different" conditions. My Daddy could grow or root anything..... I so wish I had taken the time to watch, listen and learn way more than I did, as he is gone now. And of course..hehe.. Daddy always knows BEST!...
This spring.. after finding Dave's on a net search.... is my first to grow flowers from seeds. Even that is amazing to me in that some seeds like "this" ..some seeds like "that" in order to germinate.
So much to learn.. but this has changed my life....I have always enjoyed God's beauties, but now want more of them in my own yard.

the very reason why i enjoy research on plants that attracts my fancy as a child, i love to watch grandma's farm hands. it fascinates me to see improvised techniques they do in planting or farming ... using what is handy, no fancy tools, chemicals. sometimes material used were another plant specie's sap, old folks sure know how nature can interact with one another. i wish i, too learned from them. so, yes! i can relate with ur association of ur Dad's wisdom.
i love to experiment, there are times i use hot water to soak seeds in [the thick covered type of seeds, or old datura seeds].
for cuttings, i have great success in rooting, using used pickled type glasses to soak cuttings in. changing water every other day.
oh yes, there are plenty of technique's out there to learn, just a matter of uncovering or finding them.
i think i've been pretty lucky in my lifetime having been exposed to all the tropical beauties of the tropics where i grew up.
have a great day, yesterday was miserable here, 107 degs. F, today's prediction is above 115 degs. F. ttyl.

sorry Anne, didn't mean to hijack ur thread.
I don't consider it hijacked MaVie...I consider it improved! But...did you know there is an entire chat on foliar feeding? MaVie,you are so welcomed here,as i find most of dave's gardeners do use a lot of chems....I am afraid to feed my brugs the recipe, because they are already way too big and stink up my whole house.I guess brugs like me.That's why i hope my rash wasn't a warning..Keep my family and animals away from the brugs...I do hope it was from the chili peppers, but i admit i have been afraid to lie under my canopy and that has been heart braking. I guess i will rub a little on my arm and see whats what. Thanks Molamola and vie and Beck and ZZ.
I had burns, and blisters on my face, and my eyes were so swollen i couldn't see. Sounds like chili pepper...but i read that brug allergy..or deadly nightshade allergy can come up as burns>I grow tons of Nicotiana and tons of tomatoes w/o problems.(deadly nightshade family)
If you guys check this thread

its got good stuff about foliar feeding...

thank u Anne. my son lives in Palo Alto, each time i visit, i see folks in northern Calif. have brugs in their front yard all over. u guys are lucky. northern Calif. area mimic the natural habitats of brugs. lucky!!!
i am familiar with Nicotiana's, there are so many varieties. i used to grow them too.
check one of my old thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/433894/ , i try to be organic, since i learned the dangers Miracle grow http://www.angelfire.com/hi/AdeniumsofHawaii/miracle.html imposed on our environment, i substitute food coloring on my foliar feeding, a couple drops will do, until i find another powder fertilizer that is safe to use.
i consider foliar feeding not as a snack, but giving the leaves a relief from being clog by dust or other things that prevent the leave's pores from breathing. plants like people need a bath too u know...LOL.

MaVe.. once again.. ty for sharing all your knowlege!!! It really helps me, and others I am sure...
Goodness Annie.. you really had a BAD rash.. I didn't realize it was that bad!! Hope you are better now... I wonder if these poisoness plants are like poison ivy... I was never allergic to it, and then.. I was..LOL I had it sooo bad, but now I think I am getting a lil immunity back cause I don't get it as bad???? I have to .. and want to think it's the peppers....
