Last Fall I was so excited when we put up a fence around our property and for once I had a place that the deer couldn't mow everything down. I posted a picture of something that came up and Josephine thought it was a mistflower. Since then, I literally have hundreds of these. I went to a local nursery today and what they had labeled as a mistflower had a leaf that looked a lot more like a viburnum then what I have. Are mine mistflowers? Thanks,
Annie
is this really a mistflower?
It doesn't look like my mist flower.
Well, here is the picture of mine, this is called
Fragamt White Mist flower, Eupatorium havanense, or Ageratina havanense, the main stems are woody and it blooms in the fall. I think yours looks just like mine.

Josephine.
Boy, I would love to think that mine are going to look like that second picture you posted, Josephine! Wow. Do yours spread like mad, though? My whole yard will be this plant before I know it.
Annie
No mine don't spread, are the stems on yours woody?
Oh, I think the first one does look like E. havanense. But the pic podster posted doesn't. Not sure what that is. Do the flowers on that one look like a mistflower?
I think the one Podster posted looks like Ageratina herbacea, another type of Mistflower.

Josephine.
In that case you need not doubt any more, you have Ageratina havanense, a native plant that is endemic to Texas.
Well, thank you for all of your help! I should have the prettiest yard around come Fall if all of these guys bloom!! I'll take pictures.
Annie
Please do, and if you have too many seedlings you could pot some up and share with your friends, they will appreciate it.
That's funny that you mentioned potting them up. That is what started this whole thread. I had potted up several a few weeks ago and I was going to give them away to some friends and that is when I saw the plant at the nursery that they called white mistflower and it looked completely different! I had to make sure of what I was giving away because I was afraid that they were weeds and I would never live it down!
I am so sorry ~ I shouldn't have posted. This is the one that I have. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/109876/

Sadly, it is also called a mistflower. A problem when using the common names.
I have enjoyed it though and wish you the best with yours AnnieJo.
Podster,
I have the blue one, too! Mine has been blooming since spring and the butterflies love it. It seems to like a lot of water in my yard. The white mistflower will bloom for us in the fall. So nice to have plants blooming at various times through the year to keep the butterflies and hummers happy.
Annie
Yes, this blue one does love the water. I first found it by the pond as a volunteer. I dug it up when we had our pond enlarged. I do love it. The white will be pretty too I am sure. I noticed the dragonflies sitting on these too. Not sure if they liked anything but the perch though.
I have the white ones finally planted, and they are doing good, but I lost my blue(purple) ones. I need to get some more from someone.
Last year the BF's went crazy over the West Texas Mist flowers. I was amazed.
