Roses in containers

Here's Hot Cocoa (cool color for a rose)

Are roses easy to keep in containers? I saw a yummy smelling white tea rose in Safeway I wanted to pick up but I am renting and would have to keep it in a container. Do you winter them indoors or do they come back if you leave them outside in a container? Very pretty container btw. :)

I think most roses are only hardy to zone 5, so if you want them in zone 3 you pretty much have to put them in a container and bring them in for the winter. And even if it was an extra hardy rose (don't know if there is such a thing or not!) being in a container typically knocks about a zone off the hardiness so you'd still have to bring it in.

I have had the best success with moving the roses from the pots & planting them into the veggie garden for the winter. I mound peat moss on them. I tried over wintering one last year in a heated garage, but it started to grow in January and suffered from lack of light.

RHW, not sure if there would be enough light indoors to over-winter the rose. They do go through a dormant period (drop their leaves) & it may look odd in your home.

Hmm. Do you think it would be protected enough to keep it in a shed for the winter? The shed at my place is pretty old and falling apart so I'm afraid it wouldn't give much shelter. I could stick the box from my vacuum over it, but I don't know if that would provide enough insulation.

My mom used to grow roses at home just in the flower bed that came back every year. I am not sure what kind of rose it was though.

There are some rose species that will make it through a zone 3 winter...however not the hybrid tea you saw at Safeway!

Here are a few but there are probably more (I don't have any idea if these are nice well behaved garden plants or not, all I did was look at the hardiness ratings so I definitely recommend doing some homework on them before purchasing--some of the wild rose species can be a bit obnoxious in the garden)
