Anyone raise Cayugas?

Stanwood, IA

My youngest will be elegible to enter 4-H in the fall and she has already decided she wants to raise ducks. We've planned out the duck yard (that's going to be our summer project) and we've been looking at different breeds. She fell in love with Cayugas as soon as she saw them. Can Cayugas tolerant cold? We live in Iowa so the winters can be pretty bitter. They won't be ranging, they'll be penned with a pretty good size run
Several years ago my husband and I raised some Rouens (we got them from the school...the class hatched them and then no one wanted them when summer came) and we let them range. I wasn't thrilled with them because they always seemed to end up hanging around my front stoop and pooing all over it. We'd clean it up and literally seconds later they would poo it up again-so the Cayugas will be penned. I'd appreciate any tips or adivice you have to offer on Cayugas. We won't be getting them until the spring. We'll just be preparing for them now. Also..would you recommend starting with ducklings..or having her hatch her own?

gee, i've never had any. but several folks with pet ducks have mentioned htose. i bet they can help. if not, there is always lots of info at:

hatching would make a great project too. but waterfowl is tricky. i would start with raising ducklings. then the following year attempting incubating soem of their eggs... or letting them hatch their own...
