Any luck wih cilantro this year?

Seattle, WA

I started some cilantro indoors and planted it out in March; it died. I thought it was because I didn't harden it off slow enough, so last month I bought some from the garden store, that had already been spending days outdoors, and planted it out. The chives I bought at the same time and planted next to it lived; the cilantro died.

Is store-bought cilantro our only option this year, or are others having success with it?

I started from seed. It is still in semi smallish pots and I need to get it in something bigger. But it hasn't died yet.

Gwen, are you growing it inside? Mine was coming along well inside, too -- until I planted it out. And I did harden it off, under home-made "pop bottle cloches," for a week before planting.

Maybe I should have left the pop bottles on longer.

On a bright note, one little strand of cilantro looks to be coming back, right in the middle of the garden.

No, it's outside. I started it in a cold greenhouse and then put it on a table in the patio. It's somewhat sheltered.

Mine has returned yearly - it self-sows into a raised bed. I turned the whole bed under back in March - I now have Cilantro sprouting again, amongst the Peppers.
Don't give it very rich soil, as it seems to do best with a bit of neglect: it even grows in the gravel pathways in my Veg garden!
