Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I recently received a few DOZEN rooted cuttings and plantlets from a friend I have made on this forum (you know who you are!).

I have been able to find pictures and/or info on most of them, but was hoping someone here could help me with the rest?

Need info (size/type) AND/OR photo:
Chapel Bells
Ness' Stardust Glitter

Would LOVE to have a photo of:
Delta Doll
Ma's Tender Heart
Midget Memories

Would like size/type information on:
Fairy Tales
Laughing Anna
Lyon's Spectacular
Playful Rainbow

Any help you can provide will be appreciated!

Go the AVSA website and click the letter of the alphabet your plant starts with and you can see a picture of what she looks like.
http://www.avsa.org/Photographs.asp

Once you have done that, come back here and I can help you with my First Class.
Thanks

You have some awesome av trades! hope you can find the pictures of them.....if you need more help, just ask.......

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

How did you find all of those?!?!?

Is there a different way to look for them on the avsa.org site? I looked for each of the trades I got by the alphabetical list and was able to find at least pictures for most of the trades I received . . . looked in PlantFiles . . . and did internet searches for others.

Thank you for your help, though!

You can order a disc called First Class 2 from the AVSA site for about 30.00 and it updates every two months. Then, at the end of the calendar year, you only pay 10.00 a year to update for another year. It has all the pictures, too but I would have to upload the pictures to my pictures to share with you. (a lot of trouble for temporary use)

I suggest that you google for example African Violet Midget Memories and then click on the top left only the images.
Let me try and get back to you.............

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I could only find Midget Memories on my First Class with no picture
Midget Memories (E. Champion) Double orchid. Crown variegated light green and yellow, plain. Miniature

Ma's Tender Heart was not on my First Class

Delta Doll (8209) 06/14/1995 (J. Stokes) Semidouble magenta star/white streaks. Light green, plain, wavy. Semiminiature

Sometimes names are impossible to find. Some of my very favorite african violets I can't even find in First Class or AVSA. I love some of the old old ones. Here is one without a name.......she was marked Circus Time but then I bought a new Circus Time and she has a different color bloom.

She is just a baby here but will get real big......no name but I love her

Nichole,

How are all the babies doing?

Remeber, Ma's Tender Heart was the one I had said I wasn't sure was the right ID. The president of the AV group got it from a lady in NH and we have never been able to find out any information on it. I would just put NOID on it and not propagate it under the name Ma's Tender Heart. Better to have NOID than a wrong name.

I hope that since your asking for descriptions that means everything is doing GREAT! I can't wait to see pictures of your first blooms :) I don't have First Class so I was unable to send you the descriptions, sorry.

Thank you Gail for looking those up for Nichole, I greatly appreciate it :)

Hope everything is growing like gangbusters :)

Good Morning, Kim! Wow, you came through surgery like a champ and on Dave's already this morning. I am sooo happy for you. You must have a high thresh hold of pain. That is great news!

Kim - Most everything made it great! Optimara Evergrace was one of the 3oz ones that spilled a little - that one so far is the only one that didn't make it. There are 1 or 2 that still look iffy, but we'll see . . .

I was asking for descriptions or pictures on the others so that I could see - once they got older - if they fit the description. If they do not, I will change the lable to NOIDs.

Thank you again for your help, Gail!

I have 4 leaves making babies right now of Optimara (which ever one that has the purple blooms)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Here is the first bloom from the cuttings Kim sent me early last month . . . it was labeled as Optimara's Little Cheyenne Girl . . . the picture I found here shows it to be purple in the middle, but white on the outside . . . do the blooms have to be the exact same color, or is there room for variation?

Are you ready for some more? *lol* I need to really wittle some of my AV's down so when you're ready, just holla.

I am almost done going thru the rest of the cuttings, separating babies from leaves, etc. This weekend should do it.

Kim, you would not believe the difference in them! I pulled up the picture that I took of them after I took them out of the box . . . wow. That's all I can say! I'll post before & after pix once I'm done . . . I just have the mini-trailers left to separate.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow is right! Nichole, when I pot up trailers , I leave several crowns in one pot.........I know you can't do that if you were entering a show, but they are so pretty with more than one crown to a pot...............

You are too nice, Kim!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I have a mentor who is twice as nice as me *winks*

Nicole, just say the word :)

Kim

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I've put the trailers off until last . . . only because I'm not for sure I know the difference between a crown and a sucker . . . or if they are big enough to have crowns or suckers . . . or . . . or . . . or . . .

We were at HEB the other day (that's a grocery store, for you non-Texas folks!) - they were having sample day . . . and the samples were in those wide 2oz cups . . . so we walked past the soda display twice (here Russell - mommy says you can have an orange soda . . . or two!). DH stopped to talk to the lady, and she ended up giving him 8 more from the stack! So I have enough to get started w/the baby trailers now.

Gail - I'm going up to Boerne on Saturday!

(Zone 1)

Nicole: I don't know a lot about AV's but I think I remember someone on here one time saying that blooms on a young plant might not be the same as when it matures? Ok, AV pro's ... help! Am I dreaming that I read something about that?

I found this pic of one called Optimara's Little Cheyenne at the AVSA website: http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/OptimaraLittleCheyenneLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/OptimaraLittleCheyenneLrg.jpg%23 ... looks like your plant. It didn't say Girl at the end of the name though, just Little Cheyenne, so I'm wondering if there are two different ones?

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I think I figured it out for you Nichole, I think it should have said

Optimara Little Cheyenne Girl

Here is a link to a picture which looks identical:

Sorry about that, I remember the girl that gave me the leaf collected alot of the optimara series and sure enough, this is one of them;

Lucky you, Nichole, for getting to go to Boerne.........

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Well, I have just gotten back from talking with Ken at the Hill Country African Violets & Nursery . . . amazingly enough, I did not buy one single plant! I did get about 20 2 1/4" (I think!) pots, some AV potting mix, a 24 oz container of AV food, and the latest AV magazine from the AVSA. I also got a thorough lesson on trailing AV's, so now I'm not so nervous on working on the last of the cuttings Kim sent!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

He is a very nice man...........

Just out of curiosity, did he tell you to only plant one trailer to a pot?

Are you kidding?
THAT'S what the babies I sent to you look like now?
Goodness darling, you are doing something right big time!
I have siblings here that don't look anything like that!
I am SO proud of you!
I will be separating again next month, just let me know :)
I need to dwindle these guys down and you are doing SO good with them.....meanwhile, I know exactly how to see them suffer *lol*

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Those look fantastic, Nichole!!!!!!!! I don't even know what to say except congratulations and please tell me if Ken said for you to only plant one trailer to a pot. Thanks

Lilburn, GA

Great Job!!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Kim - I told you you wouldn't believe the difference! About half of the bigger ones are getting ready to bloom, even! These just may be the houseplants I'm good at! Let me know when you start your separation!

I must say, I've had great teachers! ^_^

Gail - he did explain to me the difference between crowns & suckers (not much of one, really!). He showed me different trailers on the shelves, pointed out the crowns growing, etc. He did say that you couldn't show a trailer with less than 3 crowns. I even got a lesson on pot sizes, etc . . . I am thinking I will try to leave work early on the second Wednesday next month, so I can go to a meeting!

You know, Kim, when I told you before you sent the cuttings that I was going to give alot of these cuttings as Christmas presents? The bigger these things get, the more I like them! It is going to be HARD to give them up! But, by then I will have more variety!! ;-)

(Zone 1)

Wow! What a great job you've done! They really look wonderful! LOL about changing your mind about those plants for Christmas gifts! I think that has happened to a lot of us, I know it's happened to me, and not just with plants! LOL, I buy something I really, really like and think it's a great gift for one of my sister's or a friend and then can't part with it!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Your plants just look awesome. I think that to show a trailer you have to start with one plant and have at least 3 crowns on the one plant. I sometimes like to plant more than one crown to a pot as I like the way they look.......even though I can't show them. (don't want to , anyway)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Trailers do look good, don't they? I went and separated all the babies yesterday. I put each baby in it's own little 1oz cup.

Today's project is to separate all the babies that I grew from seed:

Thumbnail by Syrumani
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't even know that one could grow african violets from seed. You have undertaken a mighty big job.........

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Oh, it was torture! There were EASILY over 100 little babies . . . and cold-hearted me cut it down to 20!! I couldn't believe it!

I had to keep in mind not only the ones I've got getting bigger, but 2 trades in the works!! I'm ok with it though . . . (I had planted them just to see if they would grow) . . . Gail - I had seen a green pod on a NOID of a co-worker - once I saw it had dried, I opened it up, and - Oh, my!, those seeds are like dust!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is waaaay to cool! Congrats!
