I came across this in a local nursery and just couldn't resist :)

With a name like yours I would expect you to like it too LOL, but yes, it is a wonderful soft coral red, so not glaring, but still eye catching

I planted a Red Hot Poker last year; it didn't bloom then but has bloomed great
this year. Since I'm new at the gardening thing, am I supposed to cut off the spent
bloom stalks? If so, how far down do I cut them?

Hi carol. I don't know if I do it right, but when there are new flower spikes coming I cut the old ones off as near to the base as I can. It seems to be working and Nancy's Red is still blooming :)

I would cut off the spent stalks as close to the bottom as you can.

Well done with this bulb!
=)

Thanks for the quick answers, folks!

One more question, well two - does Poker reseed? And dmj in Houston - I've
heard Poker attracts hummingbirds. Any luck with that?

to be real honest, I don't know....I have mine around this plant:

actually to the left where that tomato and squash were then--lol--and this plant is such a magnet for them its really hard for me to say if they would hang around my kniphofia if it weren't there. I have some in the front but they are young--and these tend to grow in the winter here and bloom differently than for ya'll:

I don't have this one (is anyone selling this particular variety on this side of the pond?)--but I'm real into bulbs and when I see one on the PlantFile forum that looks really choice--like this one--I just have to let that grower know I'm envious! =)

I think this cultivar was raised and introduced in the US, so a quick internet search should find you a supplier :)
I've never had a Kniphofia reseed for me carol, but I'm not in their perfect climate.....

Well, I don't know about the reseeding thing, but my poker is doing a 2nd bloom
now. Not as nice as the 1st, but a pleasant surprise.

Wish mine was :) What a lovely surprise
