Aroids & Wind Advice

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Any advice for how much wind aroids can tolerate? Esp. Alocasias and Amorphophallus sp.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I think they do best if placed up close to the house. I don't know if this helps or not.

We just had 40mph wind last night and all of mine did fine.

Thanks! Anything helps at this stage ....

I am wondering how best to keep it 70º-75º in the summer and 60º-65º in the winter .....

Perhaps I need to keep it in the greenhouse year round, but wonder about how it handles high heat, as opposed to being exposed to winds in the summertime.

Worry more about the winter. You certainly don't need that tight a summer range for alocasia, not sure about amorphopallus. I just tended to mine here in DC, almost 95 degrees, they are loving it.

If you're worried it will get too low in the summer, keep in mind the issue is more with the roots, I believe --so do a heavy, dark, rich mulch to insulate them well against any night temperatures below 70 degrees.

Winter in Buffalo is obviously more of a problem. One word to start with is "inside". If you're short on room, you might consider a dormancy period regimen --described in one of the stickies above, as I recall, and not too demanding of time or space.

Night temps have been down in the lower 60's here lately, which seems rather cool for July. Probably better to just leave it growing in the greenhouse all year. I am thinking I also want to have the koi in for this winter. (I like an excuse to put a pond in the GH)

I wonder how big a container they need to be HUGE indoors.

Only time I worry in the winter is when there is a mass power outage, of course. Otherwise, I only worry about high winds. Southern 1/3 of the house is all glass. :-)

pond would be good for the Humidity for the EE's. They like it humid

ShadowPaige: Excellent point for support of installing the pond. I needed more ammo!!
