Baby Sparrow

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone, I have a question. Last week a baby bird ended up in my yard in a location where I don't have any trees or bird houses he could have fallen from. His mom was on the ground trying to feed the baby. When she flew away I went over and looked at him and then heard the mom squaking at me. I went away but she didn't come back to him so after awhile I scooped him up with newspaper, not touching him in any way, and I transferred him to a birdhouse that may have been empty. The bird houses are occupied by sparrows in my backyard. I have one robin family but they're on the other side of my house in a vent at the top of my house. I heard the baby crying but didn't see the mom anywhere. By the end of the day, birds were going in and out of that birdhouse. When I went to peek in I couldn't see the baby. I don't know enough about birds to know if I did the right thing. Any advice on what I should have done. This bird did not have any feathers and looked like he had just hatched. Naked and weird looking!

How do the babies get out of their nests. I find birds at least once a month in my garden that have fallen from their nest but my the time I come across them, its too late. Is another bird species robbing the babies from their nest?

Thanks for your help.

It could be a House Wren doing that but I would think most are just falling out of their nests.

In my case, the sparrows just build up that nest too darn big and the sparrow eggs were too close to the opening. One egg fell and a baby was about ready to!

But last year I also found a baby bluejay in the yard already dead. Just weird, I don't know where that one came from.
