Which variety of Avocado do I need to polinate a Hass?
Mike
Avocado Question
Hi Mike,
Here's an article from New Zealand. Zutano and Bacon are apparently the current ones in your area.

Thanks for the link. I also have a Fuerte variety. Do you think this will be adequate to pollinate a Hass? Or will I definitely need a Zutano or Bacon?
Mike
Good question. I know you're supposed to have an A variety and a B variety. Hass is an A, and Fuerte is a B. I do know that with avocados you have to deep-water the trees.
Here is a list of avocado cultivars in Australia. Looks on this list as if your two should work:

This article says Fuerte is good to pollinate Hass:

I wonder when they started calling it "Hass". I remember when it was spelled "Haas".

Thanks for the help Karen. Yes it looks like you just need both an A and B variety to get the cross pollination. I think "Haas" has always been a mis-spelling and it is correctly spelt "Hass"
Mike
I was thinking that it was spelled with the double A and single S back in the 1950s and 1960s as I thought the fellow who discovered it was of Dutch heritage -- but maybe not.
In any event, looks as if you are good for the two varieties you now have.
Good luck with them. There's nothing better than a good avocado.
Karen
