Gardenias - scent comparisons

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Have you noticed any particulars ones where the scent is stronger then another? Or has anyone come across a site that describes them like Tops does their jasmines?

Awww - I was just trying to be helpful :-)

OK, I'll be helpful - what did we decided this was? Anyway - it has a heady, "typical" Gardenia fragrance - you smelled it :-)

Augusta?

LOL - "we" didn't decide ~ I was randomly guessing ^_^....wonder if any of our southerners that are blessed with all kinds of these pretties might ID her for you???
Was giving you grief b/c "yes, I do" wasn't quite the list of names I was looking for ... LOL

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Now this one - "Golden Sweet" is not as "heady" - has a different fragrance - very, very nice :-)

I don't know much about Gardenias...except that my Mother had them in WV as a house plant...the smell was over-powering to me...especially when they began top turn brown...

I really don't want them in the house.

Kleim's hardy - such a sweet little flower :-)

Jo - your mom must be amazing!! God knows if I bring a potted Gardenia in my house - it's doomed to a certain death. My pal Becky blessed me w/a potted one this spring that I'd been lusting after. I believe he just might stand a chance...the rest of mine are cold hardy and IN the ground.
Becky the Kleims look so much like the Shooting Star blooms...kinda makes you wonder, doesn't it?

My Mom was an amazing gardener...folks were always getting her to start them a rose cutting...under a Mason jar. She kept my Dad busy building flower beds and shelves to put plants on. I sure do miss her. Jo

Jo - I'm so sorry, I didn't realize she wasn't with you any longer. Hugs

That's OK...It's been a few years..most people my age has lost their Mom by now. Although an 80 year old friend of mine just lost her Mom who was 109!!! Jo

I have a Kleim's, and a veitchii. I prefer Kleim's. Veitchii has an undertone that is unpleasant to me. I don't know why I pick up on chemical odors. To me datura metel smells like a synthetic air freshener. Well, to my nose veitchii has an undertone of mothballs.

And as the fragrance of jasminum officinale is strong, almost gaudy, I prefer the more subtle fragrance of her cousin, jasminum sambac. :)

Joe - you are your scents...always crack me the things you compare them to!! Most of mine are in bud or bloom now...some (jasmine) are almost overly subtle...difficult even at night to detect a scent. As for the Gardenias the Shooting Star scent is much like the Kleims - I think you'd like it. Picked up a little Gardenia 'Frostproof' - was a rooted cutting so has 1 or 2 buds on it...impatient to see how it smells if the buds don't abort. Might have to move it as I realized after planting it that plantfiles is saying light to full shade....it's in part sun right now...grrrr

Growing conditions for Gardenia's??? Sun, shade, moist, dry???

I'm totally clueless when it comes to Gardenias!

Hi Shirley (!!waving!!) They differ with regard to light preferences. My shooting star loves being in the sun ALL day where as the Radicans burned up in the sun but its replacement is thriving in filtered light beneath my tree. My Kleims and Chuck Hayes are in my flower bed getting sun all day but I have 3 gal nursery pots in front of them (with Plumies or Brugs) so I guess they're technically in part sun. I water them when I think about it...LOL...if it hasn't rained for some time. Course when they're babies I'm much more attentive with both the watering and the fish emulsion.

I am particularly fond of Vietnamese gardenia. It is not stronger than the typical gardenia, but the scent is different and I prefer it a little more.

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Kleim's hardy has a sublime fragrance: fruity, rich, slightly spicy, and tropical. I would describe it as having almost coconut undertones, and there is a very pleasant persistance that allows the fragrance to carry well on a breeze.

Shirley, Kleim's Hardy, Chuck Hayes, Frostproof, and August Beauty may all do well for you. Kleim's and Chuck are both rock solid plants that can take zero degree cold, full sun, and heat, and they are (supposedly) more tolerant of different soil types. I know Kleim's Hardy did well for me here planted in a window well where the sunlight is essentially focused by two metal roofs right down into their space.

I've seen Kleim's planted and thriving in parking lot plantings in South Carolina, so you know they can handle hundred degree plus heat, baking sun, and noxious fumes.

Hi Chantell, waving back at you!!!

Thanks for all the wonderful information on Gardenia's! Now my search begins to find some of these Gardenia's that you mentioned. Are there any particular websites that you prefer when looking for Gardenia's on-line?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

-Lowes carries the Radicans - although mine is not liking this heat of late.
-Kleims - I've purchased from Bluestone (last year's didn't thrive - I babied this one more prior to planted this time)
-Shooting Star - was from Fragrant Scent Gardens when Glen was running it. (have had for over a year - is doing great!!)
-Chuck Hayes - Becky and I found at Green Springs plant sale (have had for over a year)
-Frostproof - thru ebay (just planted this one)

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the very helpful suggestions, Chantell. I'll definitely start checking around and see what different varieties there are.
