Voo Doo Lily newbie with questions?

Phoenix, AZ

I was told that they send up the flower 1st. Mine sent up a leaf stalk 1st. I was also told that once the leaf dies it will send up a flower? Is this in the same season? Or will I have to wait until next year for a flower? Mine is about 3 ft tall and in a pot, I'm going to get it in the ground. I looked at Plant Files but couldn't find anything about how the flower emerges?

Thanks!

You'll have to wait until next year if the leaf is up already. The flower comes before the leaf.
that pot looks a little small, it might appreciate more room in the ground.

LOL, I know the pot is small. It's going in the ground today. I left it in the pot hoping for a flower so I could keep it close enough to see but not smell.

Thanks for the help!

Fishie...your corm probably isn't big enough yet...it takes a few years for them to mature enough to bloom....
They will send up a bloom even when they aren't potted...then the leaf stalk follows.
Yer gonna have to be patient, girl.
I'm trying my hardest waiting for mine, but it's hard to wait YEARS......
=0)
And pot size?
Needs to be big enough so next year's corm can get bigger, so you need room around the sides.
The one you planted will be used up and a new one will replace it.

Sharon, I've followed this thread for a couple of day. Like Fishie, I'm new to raising this type of plant. I planted one in 2006 and after a couple of years of glorious showing of its attractive self. The main corm perished! Out of the remnant of the pot that I've sunk into the ground. I found three new corms, potted them up this early spring, and one is now popped up. Yesterday, I was amazed to discover, another baby bulblet has escaped the pot and sprouted up. Though, mine hasn't yielded one flower. I just love to watch these plants grow. I'm glad to learn that the old corm will wither as it made new ones to continue the growing cycle!

Mine is now in a planter in bright shade along with 3 smaller ones. So the original bulb flowers once, sends up foliage...creates new bulbs and withers?

That looks like my venosum, I got some voodoo lilies in the ground that didn't flower first but sent up their leaves first. I couldn't figure out why, their in the ground. I don't think I missed the flower cause there's no evidence there ever was one.

Do you know the name of your voodoo lily?

I want to know too why it sends up leaves first and not the flower

Mine is a couple years old, and it did flower , the one in the pot that looks like yours, but the ones inthe ground didn't, I think their the draculus vulgarus or what ever their called. and they are young yet, so 2manyplants maybe right
