Our little Blue Cochin Bantam that has been sitting on eggs for 2 months finally has a baby. Many of you may recall me posting her 1st baby pic, the one of her own baby that only lived a day and died. Then she sat on our white Polish egg (the hen that died) and the baby died in the egg. She was so determined to sit that we put 2 more eggs under her. This morning one hatched. It is not her baby (obviously) it is from a standard RIR hen. The other egg she had under her did not make it. It started to hatch and died. She has had the worse luck but has been so determined. Hopefully nothing will happen to this baby.
Our Blue Cochin Bantam has a baby.
Oh my gosh, that is soooo cute! Thank you for posting this. Your little mama looks very content. Is she happy? With her being a 1st time mommy, how does she act with her new baby? I think the 2nd pic is my favorite!
I just showed my ds and dd and my dd (5) got the biggest smile and said aaaaahhhhhhh and gasped and said in amazement 'it is soooo purrrrrty!' lol Now they are telling my DH ALL about it!
Congrats!
Christy
So far she is doing well with her baby. Very protective though.
Glad you liked the pictures. It is a sweety.
Where is Novinger? My husband is from Lake Ozark area. Been down here for about 18 years.
Novinger in Northeast MO....we are about 35 miles from the Iowa border and 275 miles from the Ozarks. Which do you like better.....Texas or Missouri?
I'm origianally from Texas, my husband is from Missouri, but I love it up there. It is beautiful. He has some land about 20 to 25 minutes from Lake Ozark that is surrounded by state park. Beautiful. He has wanted to move back but just can't find work that pays well in the area.
How are you faring with the weather? We have been hearing reports about bad weather all through that area.
We have gotten a lot of rain.....the worst of it though has been all around us and they are having horrible flooding! We are about 2 1/2 hrs from Quincy, IL....where I am from...and I was just talking with my dad. He has a salvage yard/ car repair/ used car lot right down by front street, right on the Mississippi River, and he told me they have been warned to get everything they can to higher ground because they are predicting the levee will break by Wednesday and put everything down there under water. Luckily, they have found somewhere to put their tools, equipment, tow trucks, and the cars they have for sale....hopefully it will pass and not break!
Luckily where we live is on higher ground and we don't have to worry about going underwater....not everyone around here is so lucky and I hope all the rain stops before there is any more damage!
How awful! What a mess. We have been hearing reports from the area on the news. I've heard that even in Wisconsin they are having terrible weather and the lake at the Dells is gone. Don't know it that is true or not. I didn't hear that on the news but form a friend.
I remember when a tropical storm came through here a few years back. It went through, then backed up and stalled over the area and rained and rained. Flooded many homes and businesses. My parents and sister got flooded. I spent the rest of my summer cleaning out my parents house. What a mess. They were elderly and had to be moved out. For months they loved in a travel trailer in their driveway.
Glad you are high and somewhat dry so far. Hope this stops soon.
I hope it stops soon too. I was really nice a sunny here a little while ago, but it just went dark all of a sudden...so I'm betting we are about to get more rain.
I haven't anything about the Dells....we used to live about 2 hours from there. That is so awful about your parents and sister losing their homes! I remember when the flood of 93 went through......a lot of people lost a lot.....I remember standing one a hill in Quincy looking out over the river to what is called West Quincy, but is actually in MO, the first town over the river.....it was completely under water and one of the gas stations caught on fire...the tanks had started leaking and gas was sitting on the water and WHOOSH.....up it went. I don't think I will ever forget that site.
How is your new mama and baby doing today? We are happily awaiting for our first sets of chicks from our broodies.....I can't wait. We have 34 hens......and 7 of them are broody and on eggs...we just can't believe it!
wow, that will be a lot of chicks, i bet you are counting the days!!!
tf.....we sure are hoping for a lot of them! Well, we would be counting the days.....but I went and forgot to write it down...we had so much going.........bet I don't forget again though. We know 2 of them are REALLY close......
What luck, 7 broody hens. My husband would love that but ours just arn't interested. The only broodies we have had so far is our little Cochin and a Barred Rock. The rest of the hens are not showing any signs of being broody whatsoever. The Barred Rock has 3 babies about 3 weeks old.
The little Cochin is doing well with her baby. She has it out and about today and it seems strong and healthy. She clucks it comes running, so cute. It seems super hot today too so we are making sure they have plenty cool water.
great! do you tuck them in at night? and how is your bantam PBR?
Smedgekles...we feel VERY lucky! We have had some here or there go broody before, but nothing like this. Our little group is made up of barred rock, RIR's, 4 brown leghorns, and one americauna. 6 of the broody ones are barred rocks and 1 is one of the brown leghorns. I can't believe the barred rocks are so broody! Everyday we go out, we wonder who has decided to do it now! We are for sure scratching our heads over it. I can't wait for the babies!
how neat. i've got three barred rock pullets. and i love our brown leghorns! need about a hundred more of them LOL
hey tf....you want a hundred more of the brown leghorns? Do you have any problems around you selling white eggs? For the most part our customers don't care....but we have a few that will go without eggs all together or just wait for the brown ones. I still can't believe it, but we play along and sell them brown. Of course, we don't have as many eggs to sell these days, but I'm not complaining.....I'd rather have the chicks.
I am surprised at having a broody leghorn......I have always heard they just don't like to do it. We have had a problem with her though and are going to have to move her into her own pen. She took up sitting in a nest box......and every time any of our other girls wants to lay an egg there....she gets right up. 3 of the nests the barred rocks are on used to be hers, before they swiped them. She sure has her mind made up to sit on eggs....she just doesn't seem to have the heart to tell the others no though. Gosh, they are sure interesting!
smedgekles.....how's baby doing today?
Wish I could post another picture of her out and about with her baby, but my camera is on the blink and I'm looking for a new one. I had been using my daughters camera but she is at 4 day summer camp and of course took her camera with her.
We have the two mommys in the same little pen and the same house but we have it seperated down the middle because the barred rock kept irritating the Cochin and she wouldn't leave her nest. Now that we have the fencing seperating them she gets out with her baby. It is so sweet. It has a darker stripe down its back. Don't think any of our RIR's had that as a baby. Reminds me of an Ameraucana, which we have an adult one, but this was not her egg.
sound partridge?
lb, yess i LOVE my BLeghorns. [have i already said that?] a lady in Amarillo has one of mine, and she went broody. but her goat got inthere and smashed the eggs! she has had terrible luck...
here is my little Buck [RIP], a cross between a Buckeye and a Brown Leghorn [partidge colored sorta]
boy, he is just SNOOZING away. it is so cool to see them in their natural habitat...
I love to watch as the Mommy clucks and calls. It is so cute when babies run to the Mommy hen.
Our other hen has 3 babies. One day I saw her out there going around in circles with something in her mouth. The babies were chasing around jumping and she was determined they were not going to have whatever it was. It was so funny.
