Please identify these weeds for me :)

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

I'd appreciate anyone identifying these boogers for me and advising me on how to get rid of them. These are the only 2 weeds in my flower beds, and they are PROLIFIC! I can never get the root when I pluck them. The clover has tiny purple flowers in the spring. Is there anything on the market that will kill these but not my flowers? Thanks!

It looks like Nutrgass and Oxalis, I don;t use chemicals, just keep pulling.

The first one is nutgrass. It is the meanest weed I've ever seen. I've been battling it for 15 years and haven't won yet. I'm moving to new place and leaving it here. Nutgrass has a nut on the end and when you pull it you have to go deep enough to get the nut out. Pulling and leaving the nut in the ground just makes it worse. There are chemicals for nutgrass but you have to use them on the green parts and then use them again in 2 weeks. Even that won't get rid of all of it. All I can say is... bless you.

LOL, JuBabe, thanks for the "bless you"! I may just have to give up on these as well and keep plucking the tops off. God knows I'm sick of it. The Oxalis? if that's what it is is just as bad! It grows from a little nut-like segmented bulb that is fragile and breaks into more seeds in the ground when you try to remove it. I HATE THEM!!!!!!!!!!! There, whew, I feel somewhat better, haha!

Yep that's grass........bane to Texas gardens everywhere,,

Nutgrass is actually a sedge so herbicides meant for grasses usually don't work against it. The problem with leaving them is that they increase in number every year and can actually carpet a large area. As with oxalis, you have to dig up all the "nuts". Image is the herbicide recommended against it. I just discovered that stuff has the ability of going through 2 layers of thick landscape cloth. I'm experimenting with different ground covers that allow water to get through but will keep Bermuda grass from growing up into my potted plants and have found that nutsedge will still work it's way through the layers of cloth and mulch. I haven't tried Image yet, but may have to.

Thank you Bettydee, I may have to give that a try when I can afford it...It's definately nutgrass...

I ignore the oxalis. The flowers are pretty in the spring, and as soon as it gets really hot it withers up and fades away. I don't think the nutgrass has any redeeming features, though. grrr...

Nutgrass has one redeeming feature. When the rest of the yard has withered up and died, it's still green! LOL

That's all too true. It's amazing. We haven't had rain in about 2 months. The pastures are a mottled green. Burn bans in the entire central Texas area, but the nutsedge is still green!
