....your local Walmart gets in new Petunias with "that" great scent. Ours are carrying Wave Double Petunias...the purple ones have that great scent everyone loves and the doubles are quite attractive to the eyes. Lots of stuff clearances now. They also have some type of jasmine in 3gal pots...with absolutely NO scent...what's up with that?? THAT should be illegal, I tell you.
Just when you thought it was safe...
LOL, Chantell, it's probably Jasminum multiflorum. It is used frequently here as a landscape plant. Shall we speak to the Botanists about what the real qualifications for this genus are?!?!?!?
Personally I think all the unscented jasmines should be kicked out of the genus as punishment! LOL
Absolutely agree!!! I'd seen them previously but was during the heat of the day and gave them the benefit of the doubt....went back at dusk...STILL no scent....nope - no can do!!!
that explains it then.....so many times I've seen jasmines here in Florida in the landscape and they've had no scent.....but then again, there are rows and rows of it here in my subdivision....walking past it may be a bit overwhelming if it were to have a fragrance...but still can you imagine it...this whole subdivision would smell devine.
Will have to check out the local walmart to see what I can find there Chantell....thanks...
I'm getting a Vireya that I found on ebay...I can't wait till that one flowers. It's my last purchase online while the heat is here....it will have to be all B&M shopping from now on.
Ok...I'll bite - ???? "B & M" ???? Had to look up Vireya - nice job. I've got 2 new pretties coming in and a new Vendor for us all to use. Very sweet lady with unique items - great communications and plants (from pics) look extremely healthy!! I'll post next week when plants arrive. This will about do it for me as well...I will have officially finished using up all acct. credits and gift certificates in my possession with these last 2 purchases.
sorry Chantell....B & M is brick and motar....it's from another forum where you get deals and such and it means the deals are to be had in the actual shop, not online.
Yes please, post the pics of your new plants....what did you get by the way....you can't tease us.
I'm off to buy mothballs, i read somewhere here to use them in pantyhose to deter whiteflies....worth a try as I can't use those yellow sticky traps....I accidentally trapped Gecko's instead...poor things it was a mess trying to pry them tiny little things off that sticky stuff...never again. I've got whiteflies pestering my plumies right now, they're not any damage that I can see but I don't want to find out if they do!
You are better to use blue sticky traps for whiteflies than yellow. You should be able to hang them in the air in such a way that hopefully the geckos won't get to them.
I've used Neem oil on my plumies (among other things) with great success. Are they around the soil at all or mostly the leaves. Hmmm....
"B & M is brick and motar...it's from another forum" & where praytell does one find this forum? ^_^
I cant' post what I bought yet cuz part of it's a surprise for my buddy that blesses me with plants all the time....ssshhhh, it's a secret till next week
F4F it was such a nightmare with those yellow stickies....I tried putting them at all different angles and those silly gecko's still got caught....I gave up after catching 3....I was honestly in tears trying to get them off, I felt so bad....I'm not going near anything that's sticky again....I still have nightmares! Do you have geckos and squirrels EVERYWHERE down there where you are?
Chantell...I use the neem oil but we get the rains here daily so I guess it washes off quickly....I still spray them but probably every 2weeks or so now. I'll try the mothballs in one area to see if does anything.
Squirrels are everywhere, and the geckos come out at night and are only around the house. There are tons and tons of lizards, though.
Chantell- you've never experienced whitefly? Oooh you are lucky. The eggs are laid on the underside of the leaf and then the adults hang out on the underside as well. When the leaf blows in the wind, a big cloud of whiteflies burst from the plant. One of the harder insects to control, too.
ASTC- you dont' have any pets, do you? Mothballs are very toxic, so be careful not to come into contact with them once you put them out.
F4f..hmmmm maybe it's just lizards I have, I always thought they were geckos.....oh well there's so many of them it's crazy.
I did a bit more research, maybe I wont use the mothballs, I had read to put them in pantyhose to keep them contained but now the more reading I do about them the more toxic they become...I have a dog and 2 toddlers, I guess time to try something else....any other suggestions other than the blue sticky cards? I tried the cedar pellets but no luck with those.
By the way Chantell, your petunia's what do they smell like? I've never dared to try them for fear they'll not last long in the rains here.....then again maybe you shouldn't tell me.....
Oh Samantha - the dark purple ones have an incredible spicy scent in the evenings...they are wonderful!! I've found some white that have almost that good of a fragrance...but not quite.
I'll give the whitefly issue some thought. I think if you have access to an aerosol pyrethrin that would help greatly......Geckos in Florida are pretty unmistakable. They are white, grey or pink and tend to match the paint color on your house. (I lived in a pink house in Gainesville and the pink geckos were a hoot.) They have a very transluscent skin and are lightning fast- much faster than lizards.
Chantell, is there a variety name for those spicy dark purple petunias?
Actually now that you mention it...I did have one dealing with white flies...a few years ago....I'd rather not repeat it - ugh!!
As for the Petunias...other then the doubles I mentioned ("Wave" brand) - they are just the el cheapo ones that you can find at the big box stores. Most, not all, of the deep purple ones have that scent. How slow am I? Took me the better part of the summer - 3 summers ago before I realized what that amazing scent at night was. LOL
BTW I posted over here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/853470/ about my recent order and the wonderful vendor I "discovered" LOL - she is pretty awesome though. ^_^
oh,,, now that you are discussing whiteflies, I haven't seen any this year and they were awful last year. hmm, now I wonder if lack of rain has anything to do with it? We've had another dry summer. That must be some sticky stuff. I would be very upset if any of my little baby lizards got 'stuck'.
Elaine
Chantelle where exactly is the link? I am sure I overlooked it but I cannot find it!!
My bad....took me a bit to find it...LOL
Here's the link to her ebay store: http://myworld.ebay.com/emeraldgoddessgardens/
Here's where I posted about her and uploaded pics of the plants: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=5150598
Thank you!!!!!! I remebered readin about her earlier but I just could not find it again.
No problem-o...was kinda buried there any-who!!! ^_^ You'll be very pleased with her plants. Mine are ALL still doing great!!
The whiteflies are probably why you have to many little lizards. They're eating them!--Melis
Well then good for those little guys!!
