Do opossums eat cucumbers?

Sunnyvale, CA(Zone 9b)

I found a half eaten cucumber. I can see teeth marks.. All I ever see here is squirrels and the teeth marks are too big for squirrels anyway. And no rabbits. I have seen opossums a few times and a racoon once....

I wouldn't swear that opossums wouldn't eat a cucumber but I've only seen them eat bugs, small snakes, and things of that nature. I have had problems with turtles getting in my garden before it was fenced and eating the tomatoes and cucumbers that were low to the ground--could that be your problem?

A turtle bite wouldn't have teeth marks, they make a single triangle shaped 'bite'. (I know from experience) Possums are usually scavengers. They'll eat cukes, but more than likely they'll prefer to drag them out of the garbage than pick their own. Coons are more likely the culprit.

Hmm...

Thanks for your replies. Hidden camera would find it out, but why bother...

Opossums eat everything!

Our pet possum liked them.

what about raccoons? I wouldn't put anything past a squirrel, those guys are pests (but l love them anyways) I bet they are framing the opossums.

Skunks, woodchucks, and grey foxes are other candidates for cuke gnawing.

I have personally seen opossums eat cucumbers, tomatoes, and green beans at my house.

oh my! you guys have me a little spooked about planting my garden here. i live in the WOODS, i tell ya! we have all SORTS of critters lurking... turtles, raccoons, possums, deer, even ferrel (sp?) hogs!

was planning on a wire type fencing around the garden, but is that gonna really keep all the 'undesirables' out?!
and how the heck and i gonna be able to get in and out?

hmmmm puzzlement here for sure!

forgot to mention the squirrels and rabbits. Oh my! Just realized... if I'm planting greens, for sure I gotta watch Bugs and his Friends. How do I do that?!

Cajun2, in our area we have feral hogs, javalinas(rodents that look like little pigs), rabbits, deer, raccoons, nilgai(horse size antelope), turtles, opossums, armadillos, aligators and neighbor's dogs (plus crabs, they love lettuce). The fence is welded wire, 2 x 4 and is 30 inches high. I haven't had anything get inside unless I leave the gate open. I'm really glad the nilgai don't come here. I've seen them across the road, but this area is too populated (I hope). Nothing stops them, not barbed wire, not even 6 ft welded wire, they just take the fence with them.

I think you can see in this photo the wire fence around the garden.

Cala
Is that this year's garden?

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the info, Cala... where's the gate?
And wow... does ur garden ever put my garden to shame.... sigh.
Of course this IS the first year to do all this alone - I guess 8' x 8' alone isn't SO bad when you work Mon-Fri 8 to 5.

Yes, opossums will eat cucumbers and just about anything else. A couple of times when I've absentmindedly left a cover off one of the compost bins I've seen them climb in and munch away on kitchen scraps - citrus rinds, peelings of all types.

Cajun2, that is this year's garden. We are now extending it because I've run out of room.

Wow! I am really jealous. I had to cover the little bit I have been able to put out thus far. Your's looks great. Nice job!

CajuninKy, I remember when I lived in TN and I'd get so impatient for spring. I'll soon be jealous of you because our season will be over.
