Baby hummers outside my garage door

Mission Viejo, CA(Zone 10a)

Thought I'd share this photo I took on Wednesday of a pair of babies. They think I'm their mom coming to feed them. You can see the baby on the bottom of the photo is further along than the one on the top. It's eyes are beginning to open and the pin feathers on its head are more developed.

Look at those little beaks! Is that cottonwood fluff in the nest?
Good pic.

Actually, I believe that's some nesting material we hung out in a tree in our backyard. I have some funny photos of birds trying to stuff as much as possible in their beaks. I'm not sure exactly what it is (it's fluffy like cotton but doesn't hold moisture). We picked it up at a wild bird center.

gorgeous.

Could you please also post this over in the Bird Watching forum? Everyone would really enjoy it.

Sure. Be happy to. Glad you enjoyed it.

That is an awesome photo, Jackie! Very, very cool!! What kind of hummingbirds are they?

Mission Viejo, CA(Zone 10a)

Not sure what they are. I haven't had a good look at the mom. We have Annas and Rufous. More and more rufous hummingbirds are showing up. I particularly like their fiesty nature. They may be tiny but they are full of fight.

A Wonderful & Rare photo! The construction of the nest is remarkable. Thanks for posting it!

As much as I ramble around in the woods with my camera, I've never managed to find a hummer nest to get a photo of :-( Thanks for posting your picture--it fantastic!

You're welcome. I posted a couple more from another clutch from three years ago in the Bird Watching forum. I'm not sure I've ever found one out in the wild either. They are very good at hiding the nest. We seem to have a concentration of them around here (our house) and I'm sure we have missed quite a few. We have been walking under this nest for at least a week without knowing it was there.

Dear jackiescompost,

Thanks for sharing that photo. This is the photo of a lifetime!! I have a friend who was pruning his tree in front. He pruned one branch and he heard baby birds chirping. Sure enough, he had accidentally cut down a hummingbird nest. He used rope to tie the branch to about the same position it was originally at. When the hummingbird babies grew up and left the nest, he just untied the branch and disposed of it.

Thanks again,

Chuck

Oh, how sweet. I keep looking for my hummer's nest (ruby throat's), but have never found one.
Thanks for sharing,

Chuck, what a "lucky break" for the hummingbird babies that it happened on your kind friends lawn who cared enough to make it work. :-) Nice story.
