Pepper Problems!

Rock Tavern, NY

Can someone help me? I am growing a number of vegetables this year, some of which are California Wonder peppers. I started the peppers from seed, and they sprouted fine. They gained some size, and I planted them in the garden, way after the frost date. Now they look sad to me. They really have not put on any size at all, and one is turning yellow.

I purchased two other pepper plants (a yellow and an orange) from Home Depot, they were Bonnies (the grower's name, not the peppers'). They really haven't grown either, and one of them did make two very small peppers which ceased growing and fell off. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with them? What do I need to do? The tomatoes next to them are growing like gangbusters, and the squash on their other side are doing very well. The soil is new (we brought in topsoil and compost to mix into the dirt that was there), and nothing grew in that spot previously. I don't see any bugs, but I must be missing something.

I can't figure it out. Does someone know? Thank you for your help!

Peppers do like to be warm and dry. Have your temps flucuated? I would not worry as they will take off as soon as the weather normalizes.

Since one is turning yellow, I would think they might be getting too much water. I'm not sure how your weather has been there, but here in Kansas we've had a cool wet start to the gardening year. Peppers don't like it too wet so I sure wouldn't give them extra if you're getting lots of rain. Some extra warmth and sun won't hurt them either. Maybe a homemade cloche from a gallon milk bottle would help give them a boost.

Thank you! The temps have been odd here. We have had a heat wave for a few days, and now it's been warm during the day and cool at night. We have gotten a fair bit of rain too.

I will try the cloche idea to see if it'll perk that poor yellow one up.

Thank you again!

lb15 - ditto here to all you've said. Very frustrating!!! After having the majority of my ep's wiped out by aphids, I'm freaking! No eggplants and no peppers would make me a very sad girl...or old broad as the case may be!

ow about the bizarre weather, huh? The sweltering heat darn near did me in, then last night I had a chill! And the bonus of last week's hail storm was was a bit much. (Could it be that Mother Nature is going through menopause???)

i NEVER put my pepper and plants in until the first week of june which is two weeks after my last frost date. i already have a bunch of peppers and one that is already red. yes sequee, i haven't picked it yet.

My red, yellow and orange bells are looking sad also. I was hoping since last week it did warm up and quit raining they would look better. Then friday we recvd 5in more of rain, last night it was 57 degrees, today its barely 80 and it's supposed to be down to 60 again tonite.

I personally love this weather, but my peppers are all so scrawny. Should I go ahead and pick off all the peppers that are there, and hope the plant gets bigger before flowering again? The plants are so small, there is no way it could hold a full size pepper.

I would let them be! Nature has a way of taking care of itself.
