HELP- Oscar is being a bad boy

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

Oscar my rooster keeps grabbing the girls by the neck and flinging them. Why is he being mean?

Durham, NC

My Sam does the same thing. He is about 3 months old. Now he is also trying to hold them down and peck around the neck. I would love to know what to do about that. Some of the hens are 2 months old and quite a bit smaller. Thanks for any info. Geeze

geeze, mine are about 3 1/2 months, and i don't have a clue as to why he started behaving this way. maybe someone will be along who knows

i wish you had some older hens, they would straighten him out. i would grab him by the neck, swing him up into my arm, tuck him under one side, and carry him around whil ei did my chores. say somehting like MY HENS!

you should always be looked at as the head honcho of the flock. they stomp at you, you stomp back bigger. if you are very tall, you may need to squat down to eye level to remind them who you are.

also having a crate for a time out is helpful... i say MY HENS ans MY EGGS as a reminder if i get a crossed look, and i think they connect it iwth the unpleasantness of spending time in my arms.

oh, as to how it started, you may not have an older roo to teach him how to be a gent with the ladies. three months is hormone time!

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

thanks tamera. now i will carry oscar around while being chased by baby turkeys! oscar looked like he was gonna flog my hubby the other day. my hubby told him, don't even think about it big boy. it worked.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

no, he's my only roo

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Turkey's are the friendliest things......and they will follow you everywhere! Last night I was in the house and looked out as my DH passed and had to laugh. He had let our 14 jumbo whites out of their outdoor pen, to go exploring ........first he passes in his bib overalls and straw hat strolling across the yard like he didn't have a care in the world, then right behind him...all the jumbo whites, the 3 dogs and 1 cat. It looked like a parade! So funny.

tf....if you like friendly critters, you'll like turkeys......a little bit of a different learning curve on them, but you know where to go to ask questions! Besides.....I swear there was never a better tasting turkey than one you have raised on the farm! : )

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

tell me about it. i was so disappointed last year that we didn't have one, so we had goose for Thanksgiving...

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

I know what you mean. Last year when we hadn't raised any, we had a store bought one...and I swear it tasted like cardboard. Even the drippings didn't taste right! Not this year though....I can't wait!
