Over this hot summer when we can't get out much, let's really try to add our gesneriad pics and plants to the plant files. Remember how much fun we had doing the African violet files.
I am not good at this but I have learned how to do it. If you are willing to help at all, please keep this thread close to to the top of the forum so people can add their names (of just saying that they will add photos and new plants). Even if someone has added that particular plant and you have another picture to add, please add them.
Thanks
gail
***edited to say it is confession time of truth...........most of the genera are listed so you can just add pictures of your streps, chiritas, columnea, etc. I didn't know someone had been working this hard.....hang my head in embarrassment!

Adding gesneraid plants and pics to Plant Files
i don't know how to do this & where is plant files on here?
bonnie
Bonnie, you have so much to offer..........RainGazer is so much more adept at this than I am.........Go to plant files.........to make it easy, do a general search for Sinningia to see what is already there ..............(we are just doing one genera at a time)
When you see what is listed and the pics, you can add a picture if you wish. If it is a new plant, go to plant files and click at the top for 'add a plant'
You will see:
Common name:
Family: Gesneriaceae
Genus: Sinningia
Species:
Cultivar name: Lady Lady (for example)
Now scroll down before you hit SUBMIT and add hybridizer's name or date if you have it
If I don't know or am unsure about species or hybridizer, etc. just leave it blank and someone will come behind you and fill it in....but it is very helpful if you can get the hybridizer's name
Once you have typed in one......your computer will remember all those words like Gesneriaceae......
If you wish you can do it in two steps.
First just add the page in plant files with name, et.
Then you can go back and add your picture (scroll down on the new plant file name and there will be a place to upload a picture)
If this is confusing to you, dmail Joan in administration.......she is very helpful...........
Bonnie and anyone else:
You can't do a general search for sinningias. You must use the full form, but all you have to put in is the name Sinningia and they all appear. We need your plants, Bonnie, since you have more than most people anywhere.
When you want to learn, please let Joan or me know............
RainGazer and Keyring have a lot of the gessie family, too.
Bonnie: At the top of this screen click on Guides and Information, then Plant Files, then click on the green box that says click here to search for plants. Then type Sinningia into the area where it says genus and it will take you to all sinn's listed in Plant Files. It will bring up all 59 Sinningias that have been added to PF so far.
If you find any listed that you have you can upload any pic's of that plant. If you have any that are not already listed you can at the top of the screen click on add new plant and add any and all info you have for a new one.
ooops ... I must have skipped over Gail's post telling you how to do it.
Sorry Gail.
Lin, we need you!! Never apologize when it comes to the plant files. I am lost there but I am trying to get better at it.
We really need Bonnie and others to help as I can't lead this expedition into plant files. I have trouble keeping up with me!
I don't have any Strep's or Sinn's to add but would certainly do so if I had them. Maybe next year! ^_^ I keep saying I am downsizing and I have been so good and NOT bought any new plants this year!! I am so proud of me! hee hee ... of course the year isn't over yet! LOL.
I am placing my bet on you not waiting until the end of the year (LOL)
I'll help as I get time and more blooms. Might be a good excuse to sift through all my photos and put them into some type of system. LOL
Here's a link straight to the PF advanced search form. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php In the Genus space, fill in the type of plant you're looking for: Sinningia, Streptocarpus, Saintpaulia, Kohleria, etc. If you know the name of the plant itself you can put that into the Cultivar space. For instance, to search for Sinningia 'Flair', you would type Sinningia into the Genus space and Flair into the Cultivar space. Does that help? Or did I just repeat what Gail and Lin said? LOL
WE need all the help we can get, Rain.......Thanks!
What slows me down is that I didn't put names on my pictures thinking that I would remember. From now on, every picture I take I am going to put a name on. I am now going to wait until they rebloom as I want to be sure.
The strep names are much more familiar to me so I easily recognize a strep picture but will add their names as I go.
I always take a picture of the entire plant with the tag visible. Then I take bloom closeups. That way, I can tell from the numbers on the photos which bloom pics go with which plants and I have a full pic of the plant, blooms, tag and all. It's the only way I can keep up with anything. When I resize, I do make sure to give the photo the proper name.
I don't even know how to 'resize' ^_^
Rain, why don't we just add a lot of names we know of in the sinningia plant files and maybe then people can just add their pictures when they are ready. Bonnie, do you mind if I add the names of your collection? I will dmail you.
I use Irfanview to resize. It's super easy to crop out what doesn't belong and resize. It's a free program, too! You can't do all that fancy stuff with it, but I don't want to do that anyway. http://www.irfanview.com/ You can download it from there.
Thanks, Rain...............I do crop my pictures..........I have a program for that but don't bother with the color, etc..................
Here is your gift of 'pure love' for what I owe you from the houseplant thing........the love comes because I spent an hour outside in the sun washing the soil off. As you said, "Don't send the dirt because I have dirt here in Tennessee". That was funny.
NOw I just have to pack it........laughing out loud
I can't believe that they still have the original tags on them.
Every year I grow older I make a 'bigger deal' out of every thing I do.^_^
OMG Gail!!! Those are fabulous!! Oh I'm so excited! ^_^ I may have to get a few more of the kids' friends to come over and help dig for those. ;o) You know the love comes right back to ya! ^_^
Edited to add...I was so excited I forgot to say thank you, thank you, thank you!!! ^_^

What is one man's junk is another's treasure. They won't even grow here...........they need some dormancy....................didn't know you were going to get so excited (LOL)
Nice bunch of plants you are going to have there Amy ... now tell me - what are they? Look like amaryllis or lilies of some sort. You are going to have a great bed of bloomers from that group, hope you will post a picture when they get planted and bloom!
Lin, they are daylilies I ordered from someone in Utah. I didn't know anything about required dormancy on daylilies when I ordered them. For a year I tried to grow them and finally dug them up this past January and put them in gallon containers. They will be happier in Tennessee in zone 7!!!
I would never be generous enough to give away amaryllis as we can really grow those in the ground here.
Hi ya Gail. I had no idea daylilies didn't do well in your area. I have never had much luck with them myself but I have seen beautiful ones growing around town. I sometimes have a problem of lily bulbs (as well as other bulbs) getting buried too deep and they never come back up the next season. I bet Amy will have a beautiful daylily bed in her garden!
Lin, they have to be a certain kind of daylily that we call evergreen (for whatever that really means). There really aren't too many kinds that will grow and naturalize here very well,. but I have been looking at them when I do go to a local nursery around here.
I want to start collecting amaryllis bulbs that do great naturalizing here. But I need to learn more first about them!
Ok since you are telling us how to do this could someone tell me how they add there pictures here? I got there by mistake on day and I don't know how they did that... I will have to read up on adding to plant files as tonight I am to tired to take in what was just said...LOL
Rain, I love that photo program and have had it since I got a computer... I have others but always use Iview.
Off to read a few then bed...
Hugs,
Susan
Ok Susan ... for example, click on this link for Strep 'Jason': http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/160000/ and then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.
See the area that says: Your Actions. Second item down says upload an image of this plant. You do it the same way you upload a photo when you are posting on a thread.
Hope you did it, Susan and you are always so helpful, Lin!
I have not tried yet but will...LOL Thank you for so much help...
Hugs,
Susan
Can't believe I missed this thread..I need to look for new threads more often..lol...Excellent idea Gail...I will do whatever I can to help you out with the plant files too.I don't grow near as many as alot of you do but I think I should have quite a few to add...
Hi,
I typed in streptocarpus in the plant file and it said none could found. What am I doing wrong?
Hugs,
Susan
It should have worked Susan..I typed it in and all these..100 came up...
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/search.php?q=streptocarpus&Search=Search+PlantFiles
I think streptocarpus is the genus but I don't think that should matter in a search....
edited to add: OK now my link don't work..lol..it really did come up tho..lol...

Susan, when you get to Plant Files, type the word streptocarpus into the space for genus (it should be the third one down) and it will show you everyone that is listed in PF.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?Search=Click+here+to+search+for+plants
Common Name
Family
Genus: streptocarpus
then click on search and it should bring them all up
Thanks Lin... going to try that now... My book does not give me allot of info about how seed pods come... grrrrr..LOL
Hugs,
Susan
