Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology offers a correspondence course in bird biology. I took this fascinating course, and completed it, about five years ago. It's a little spendy, but well worth it -- you learn a great deal about birds. The section on bird vocalization includes a CD. For more information, contact them at: www.birds.cornell.edu/homestudy.
You can also become a lab members and get a discount on the homestudy course, as well as their quarterly magazines, Living Bird and BirdScope.
Cornell encourages private citizens throughout the U.S. and Canada to participate in Citizen Science projects it sponsors, often in partnership with Audubon. This includes Project Feederwatch (which I've done), Urban Birds projects, Birds in Forested Landscapes, and many others.
This is a fascinating way to pursue the passion of birding, that benefits both the birds and humanity. I've found it really a wonderful, rewarding experience!
