The most frustrating cat

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

We began feeding a tiny stray years ago, caught him and had him neutered but that was it, he wanted no part of living indoors. This past winter he decided to move in and he acts like he always lived here. He used the litter box from day one and had a couple of inappropriate peeing incidents early on when he had a serious bladder infection but that was it. Until ....... about 2 weeks ago he peed in a pile of towels on the floor as they waited their turn for the washing machine. When I picked them up I noticed the wet spot. Then it was a soft, shaggy bathroom rug and this past Sunday it was a pile of sheets my house guests kindly removed from the bed and left in a heap on the floor for me. It seems he picks soft things he can scrunch into.

Obviously, I need to keep my laundry off the floor and I have already washed and given away the shaggy rug. Are there any repellents out there that I could safely spray on the fabrics around the house? I do not know what he might pick on next and if I am not here to see it right away - Yuck. I have new rugs and I am scared to leave him in the rooms with them. One of these days he will realize beds and blankets are soft.

There have been no changes in his life since this odd behavior started. Any insights would be sincerely appreciated.
