Fennel X dill ?

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

My dill self sowed and looks wrong.
It started out looking like dill and smelling like dill, but now it is turning dark and smells different.
It is grown about 5 ft. from the bronze fennel, can they cross?

Some is even trying to go to seed. It is too short for either and way to early for my fennel,

I haven't had this happen, but I did read that it can happen, so I would say yes, they crossed. In fact, the book I read it in said they cross easily and then it makes the flavors "off" on the new plants.

I don't know how far apart they'd have to be not to cross. I don't even know if it's possible to have them not cross, when insects pollinate and go from flower to flower over such long distances.

Thanks, I guess I will just leave them for the butterfly's and start some ''real''dill from seed for me. If it is not too late.

Ok how do I get rid of this empty space.

wow. I might have to move my bronze fennel. I really don't want it crossing with my dill.

Mrs Ed, has your bronze fennel ever bloomed and set seed? Mine hasn't, that is why I ask.

Molly, This is my first year growing Bronze fennel.

Conneaut, OH(Zone 5a)

My bronze fennel set seed last year.I winter sowed the seeds. They germinated and I planted them next to the mother plant. They are only about 6" high, but doing fine.I believe it will seed in the 2nd or 3rd year.Edge

Thanks Edge, good to know
