For the past few days, when I collect my eggs from "the girls", I always have one brown egg that has a neat 1/4 inch size hole poked in the end of it. The membrane on the inside is not punctured, but a hole has been punched in the shell.
Do we have any chicken psychiatrists on DG who can tell me WHY a hole is being pecked into the end of 1 brown egg each day? Is this a bad case of "egg envy"???? Help me out if any of you have a clue why????
Need a chicken psychiatrist! Is this "egg envy"?
Someone is trying to return to the 'womb' ? LOL

I had NOT thought about that! ....You're a genius!! :-D
Sounds like someone is jealous of someones egg, or maybe that's the whine talking : )
We have been having the same happening here, but I am beginning to think one of the girls might be getting a penchant for eating eggs. Since the shells on ours are so thick and hard, she might not be able to get more than just a little hole in them before we get out there to collect them.
GG
Of course, it could just be a case of trying to see what's in them.
well, i had the samething here, always the same egg. so i did some snooping and spying. this gal was having a hard time pushing it out, and she would wiggle till all the bedding was gone and drop the egg onto the concrete floor from 4 inches high! apparently she wasn't eating well [as in too lazy to dig for the good stuff!] and her shell was just weak enough, besides being feshly laid, to always have that crack at the end.
i upped their high protein treats and solved that problem.
for those curious, it was a Black Australorp. my Buckeye's and Leghorns can lay eggs from the rafters and they wouldn't break LOL
AS IS CUSTOMARY IN THE FIELD OF THE PSYCHE, some things don't have a deeper meaning, they have a scientific explanation.
[ok, everybody throw broken eggs at me for spoiling the fun!]
tf
TF, not to spoil your fun, but Glenda and mine aren't cracked, they have holes which look like peck marks on the ends. Round, and sometimes square HOLES!!
So sorry,
GG
GG, yes, that is how my daily egg is. It has a neat, some times squarish, hole in the end. It's not cracked at all. Just has a hole.
:-
huh, wish I could help you two out, but I have not had this happen before....knock on wood....hopefully someone can tell you soon how to get the 'culprit' to stop it!
That might be a problem with me, too many hens in the henhouse. I would be only able to tell which one it is if I caught it in the act. And, when I open the door, any hens inside act innocent. This last one I didn't notice the hole until I was washing the eggs. So, I don't even know which nest it came from. But, I do think it was a hen trying to break the egg to eat it. Since the shells are kind of thick and hard, perhaps she is having a hard time getting the egg to break.
