a mystery to be revealed.....

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Last year I was given some seeds by a friend and hoya grower in Houston... pods came off a H. obovata and the only hoya blooming when the obovata bloomed was H. carnosa... The leaves show that to be the likely pollen parent... GREAT grower and VOILA...I am about to see the first flowers.... Can't wait. Will post them when they bloom

what will the name be aff. obovata syn. carnosa? or how does the naming work?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Well...the name would be H. cv. H. obovata X H. carnosa - I think. Until/if it is named. I have no intention of flooding the area with crosses unless they happen to be worth growing and I will grow each seedling out to see the flowers and choose the best one...or scrap them all. :>)

Here are leaves of another plant. I see where one leaf has gone berserk and grown twice as large as the others....They are NOT a dark green...but rather a light one but they are succulent feeling.

Carol, very nice.....I can see characteristics of both. Do you know if it has clear or milky sap?
Thanks for sharing.

Update: Those flowers lasted for 20 days!!! Now umbel #2 is blooming and 2 other seedlings have flowers forming....anxious to see if all the flowers are going to be the same. There is a good chance they will vary..... YAY

Long lasting flowers and more to come! I will be curious to see if all the flowers will be different. Take lots of pictures for us!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

All the flowers on that plant will be the same...but will post the other flowers if they are different!!!

Trelleborg, Sweden

Hmmm... to me they look different from my carnosa. Here's a close-up of one carnosa flower: http://www.myhoyas.com/Hoya%20carnosa%20one%20flower.htm and here's a close-up of some obovata flowers: http://www.myhoyas.com/Hoya%20obovata%20some%20flowers.htm . To me the corona is "chubbier" in Carols photo... Just my thought!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Christina...it is a hybrid...not H. carnosa.... LOL

Trelleborg, Sweden

I know that! Just that you wrote you thought they looked like carnosa...

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

AH - just that overall it has that look. What i like about it is that they bloom alot and the blooms last for weeks!!!
