I will be thinning my white strawberry bed and will have extra plants for trade in a couple of weeks. This is an alpine type berry on a vigorous plant that sends out prolific runners. Hardy zone 5. Good in baskets, but flowers nothing to write home about. Runners in baskets can hang down 5-6' or more. Fruit is white and has pineapplely hints to the taste. Birds don't bother them. Long fruiting season with some berries in the fall.
Looking for edibles hardy in zone 5 but will consider?
White strawberry
I'm interested in your strawberry plants, but I'm not sure what I'd have to trade you. (Ake a look at my tradelists and I'll look around for edibles.
Runners? I'm glad this thread caught my eye... I grew some white alpine strawberries from winter sown seed this year, and I thought they'd be well behaved clumpers like my other alpines. I will put them where they can run to their heart's content!
I hope you get some good swaps... alpine strawberries are delightful!
Critter, Thanks for the good wishes. I want to correct a possible confusion. When I stated "alpine type berry" above, I was describing the fruit not the plant. The best information I have is that alpines do not send runners. This strawberry is potentially invasive. I planted a plant at my parents garden two years ago and now am picking strawberries for them This is in the area where I till every year to put in a garden and made no effort to preserve or spread the plants.
I do have a few white alpines in the same bed. I can tell the difference between the fruits. The alpines are long and thin while this berry is shaped more like a regular strawberry.
These have a lot going for them, taste, hardiness, spreading and invisible to birds. Where they are weak is that the berry peak size is only about 1" max and they only produce for about half the summer.
Ah, OK. Thanks for elaborating... I guess I'll know for sure what I have when/if I get a berry... or if they start producing wild runners! It's also good to know that white berries really are "invisible" to birds. I get a few tasty treats from my border of red alpines, but I do believe the birds get their share and then some. :-)
Yeah! don't get me started on the birds. I used to love robins until I started growing small fruit, now I dream of robin meat pies and omelets made from tiny blue eggs!

They only edible fruits I have are tropical. I do have all kinds of veggie seeds tho. I have a trades list if you care to look. I would love some white strawberry runners. I could pay shipping if you like? If you are looking for veggie seeds...let me know what and I can look in my box. I have common things and some not so common, like burgundy beans, true blue cabbage, chedder califlower. LMK
