Tornado damage

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

We were lucky that we did not get any heavy damage but the wind sure hammered my plants, this is (was) Golden Lady, snapped off at the base, and she was LOADED with buds.

These are the buds, 35 in all. I placed them in a bucket of water to see if they will bloom, and get new roots

Awe gee that's very upsetting ...I am sure she will shoot up again pretty quickly, sorry to hear of your trouble stay safe and good luck with your traumatized Angel.

I was just reading a report on the internet about the expected bad storms in the midwest, I'm so sorry for you all!!! Your poor brug really got battered, I hope it will have a second chance to prosper and be beautiful. The weather sure can be frustrating, we're looking like we'll be suffering the same drought conditions we had last year, which were devastating. Good luck to you, hope things quiet down!!!

Take the buds off and make new plants from the cuttings

Stay safe everyone out that way.

Oh Doris, How sad... but we have to count our blessings and just be glad there was no one hurt.

Those buds look like they may still be able to open! All may not be lost yet. Now you have 2 Golden Lady brugs! gotta dig deep for the positive sometimes.

I have some big cuttings in my kitchen I was supposed to mail.. *gulp* (public admitting my flakiness) and they are open and smell divine.

Hope all settles down there for you.

ZZ I have never had that happen to me ...do you mean the flowers will bloom even after cutting? wow is there no end to the wonders of these flowers ...and does the bloom use up all the plants growing energy? I am curious as we are expecting severe winds shortly and I have buds on my branches.

Would staking the brugs (sorta like when trees are newly planted they are staked...) have helped them from not being snapped off like that? My condolences kareoke but, on the brighter side, you now have two plants as I'm sure that the root base will re-grow?

Take care...Jan

I am hoping the buds will still bloom it is supposed to be in the 90s for the rest of the week, I will leave the root planted and hope the large branches get roots also.

Doris, I'm glad to hear that the damage wasn't any worse. The mid-West has had more than its share of tornadoes this year. Here, the drought looks like a repeat of the 2006 drought. The pastures are beginning to brown out and having unusually early hot days. Your Brugs will bounce back. Meanwhile I hope the buds on Golden Lady open.

Sorry to hear that Kareoke. My brug 'Cypress Gardens' is like my holy grail and I don't want anything to happen to it. This is the first brugmansia I have been able to grow on to a nice plant. But with the tornado and severe storm threats yesterday, I lost half of the Y branch before I could get it inside. I was moving pots and planters inside as fast as I could and all of a sudden I see a branch whiz by me and I knew what it was. My poor Cypress Gardens. It is still growing fine and will heal, but most of the flower buds were ripped off and I snipped the others off so it'll put more effort into regrowing and heal. I expect it to bloom later again anyway. I actually have mine staked in the planter for now and that's probably what saved it from breaking off. My plumeria looks horrible too. AT LEAST mine did not completely snap off at the base like your Golden Lady. Such a sad sight. Hope your Lady grows back strong and beautiful!

I am so sorry. What a georgeous plant that was --- and will be again.

If you get a few shoots allow one to shoot up to about 3/4 ft and it will give you an instant umbrella type formation ...like a standard ...

like this one which is now about one and a half foot taller ...perhaps you may need to stake yours ...keep the moisture up to it and give it a little protection

You will most likely get a few shoots and if you prefer to let them all grow up you will get a more bushy effect. Good luck ...and I hope you have no other weather bombs ...don't worry your Angel will come back quickly and you will be smiling again.

This was a nice sight this morning Golden Lady never gives up, a lot of the buds have fallen off but some are going to make me feel better.

Glad you are ok ...you need to strip those leaves under water ...take them off or they will rot ...I hope those blooms open for you. Stay safe and I hope you get more plants from your cuttings.
