Dog killer

Utica, MI

Well yesterday a guys lab three doors down form our house killed 3 of our chickens. My S.S. Im so mad and sad. This dog sometimes wonders around down the street, our street which is a privite street. Anyway its one thing if the dog goes for a walk and its another thing when the dog goes for a walk killing other peoples pets! I am guilty of my dogs leaving the yard to but they never go out killing pets. So Dave is going to go over there and have a good ol talking to the owners. O yeah the craziest thing is the owners werent even home! My dogs never get out of the house and they know how to. If he knows his dog knows how to get out of the house which im sure he does, he needs to safe proof the house or put the dog in a cage til he comes home! O well. The crappiest thing is now the dog is going to be back to sniff around. How long do I keep my chickens in the coop now so when the dog comes over he sees that he cant get them? They were free range. I know like with hawks you put them back in the coop for a couple weeks. Do I treat it the same way? This just stinks! Well Ill check back up with you all tomorrow as of today my daughter is graduating from kindergarden today so ill be really busy. Have a good day.

I probably should of titled it killer dog lol

Well--don't kill the dog! You will probably have to develop some way to keep the dog from viewing your chickens as free entertainment. Some sort of aversion--but I'm not sure what will work. A cattle prod? (just joking).

Lobee, don't you have a leash law? I think all of Michigan does. Contact your local sheriff if you are in the country and see what can be done about it. You can take the neighbors to court and recover the cost of the chicks. You can get up to $50.00 each for laying hens. A friend of ours did that and he won. Of course he also went the route of using a kill trap on the cats and dogs in his neighborhood, but I don't recommend that.

When we had a problem with our neighbor's dog a couple of years back. We called him and told him to keep his and his son's dog home. He did for a year. Then we caught the son's dog back over here, (before it got to the chicks), and called the sheriff. Animal control was coming out in this direction and went to their house and because the dogs hadn't had vaccinations, they were picked up and cost their owners about $50.00 to get back from the pound. They put up an invisible fence and we never had any more trouble. The neighbor since has died, and now the property is up for sale.

We had a neighbors dog kill one of my peacocks. We talked to them with no result. (they are rich and feel they don't have to contain their animals ,5 dogs and numerous cats) Anyway, I called animal control and they had me bring in the dog (it was friendly). The owners bailed it out. Animal control picked it up again. Owners bailed it out. The next time I called animal control, they told me "Look, you don't have to bring it to THIS shelter" and then gave me a list of no kill shelters outside of the county. I took him two counties over and said I found him on the highway. ever saw the dog again.

Yep, that would work. I do have another option...did have to use it when the sheriff didn't respond to a rottie mix that threatened me outside my house. Didn't want to, but that dog wasn't friendly at all. It could have been a bear dog that had been abandoned by the owners or perhaps lost, but since I couldn't go out of my yard, DH had to dispose of it.

well dave went to go talk to them the other day. Things went good he said. They were very sorry for what happened the dog is going on a cable and it wont happen again. So at least he was understanding about it. Dave made it clear to him it cant happen again. I will always keep my eyes open though because we all know how sneaky dogs are. We are going to close the yard in. So thats the results. Yeah I dont want to kill the dog and I wouldnt but I do want it to learn a good leson that it wont forget though.

We have a neighbor (the same rich ones as before) who have a white poodle that comes on porches to pee and gets in garbage and otherwise makes a nusince of it's self. They denied that it ever left the yard so we filled super soakers with rit dye (pretty harmless, but permanant, you can also use any vegatable dye). When the dog comes around we spray it with the squirt guns. (I use green, my son uses yellow and annother neighbor uses red. The dog looked tye dyed most of last summer. They got the point and the dog stays home (most of the time). On large dogs, a paintball gun works pretty good. Not only does it get the dog's attention, but the owners know it's been somewhere it doesn't belong.

jylgaskin that is such a great idea! Doesn't hurt the dog and punishes the owner by embarrassing them which they deserve for their negligence.

yeah that is a good idea, I like that! Well for now lets just hope talking to him solved it. It sounded like it did. He did take it in very good. But if it doesnt and the dog returns I am going to what you! Thank you very much.
