Algae Bloom

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

My pond is about a week old. I went out to the pond today and it was green. I had a feeling this was coming since it had been starting to green up on the bottom. I have a UV light but have kept it off so the beneficial bacteria could build up in the filter. So how long do I wait before I turn on the UV? It is the pea soup variety not the string.

The good news is the water readings are great otherwise.

Is your pond in full sun? I would recommend turning that UV on asap. The bacteria will still build up over time.

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

Yep, full sun. The fish don't seem to mind but I can't see them and the stuff is starting to fill up the skimmer. I will turn the UV right after the rain stops.

ok, then let us knw results

Update, the UV worked wonders! Unfortunately we have had some really hard rains and freakish winds and the day after I turned on the UV my pond was full of mud. Most of it has settled though and my bottom drain should suck that up once I ungate it. Have to still go diving in to put the top on... can you tell I'm putting that off? lol

UVare the best!

I am considering a UV filter for our little 500 gal. pond. Anyone know anything about the quality of Ani Mate filters? There's one I saw on ebay.

I highly recommend Laguna

Thanks!

No problem

The laguna filter w/ uv is actually what I have. So far so good. I like the backwash feature and that I don't have to open it everytime to clean it.

Ordered another filter too, a matala biosteps.

Evesta, be sure to show more pictures later. My daughter sent me this photo, suppose to be of the Kearney tornado, you have probably seen it too. Scary looking to me!

YIKES, who took that picture?

Sarasota, FL

My gosh, can you show me some real weather pictures? =]

Wymore, NE(Zone 5a)

Don't know who took the picture. My daughter said it was someone going down the interstate. Once a picture like that is passed a couple of times, it can spread like wildfire, and nobody will ever know the facts behind it. Wonder if Evesta saw this?

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

I hope she didn't see it in first person!

Not sure who took that pic but is making the email rounds. I did see 2 tornados forming on the edge of town before they dropped. Sorry, they are kind of blurry. This is looking off my front porch. This is about the time the tornado derailed a train.

This is the other tornado forming that went north of town and did the most damage to Kearney.

This is looking east off my back porch as the storm hit town.

Then it ended with a beautiful rainbow. We had no damage and didn't lose power. About a 1/3 of the town was without power for several days. Luckily the tornado was only an F1, no one was hurt.

Wow. That kind of weather is just amazing, looks very scary to me! Glad you stayed safe.

I've been in a lot of tornados, some much bigger, but I have to say this is the only one that really scared me, mostly because we were directly in the path. From the pic on the front porch to the back porch I was downstairs and the noise and wind going on up stairs was frightening. The wind is what frightened me the most. It went completely still and quiet and then it was like a hurricane, trees bending, fences and debris flying.

Luckily it happened right around 5:30 so people were home and aware. I hate those tornados that come in the middle of the night. You can't see them and there isn't a lot of warning.

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

Whew! Evista - Do you have a NOAA weather radio? If not, I highly recommend one. They are the best source of early warning for the middle of the night storms.

Really glad the storms missed you.

Scary! Love the happy ending though, especially the rainbow--nice shot!

And to think you were just concerned about algae bloom...lol, how is that, anyway? I put some liquid in mine called "Algae Clear" ( I think that was the name) made esp. for ponds, and it worked, but now I need to get some of that stuff that clumps the floating particles so they'll sink to the bottom. Then I'll vacuum it. Poor fishies.

Nice pictures Evesta. I would have been scared that's for sure.

I live in Florida, we dont have tornado's just hurricanes =[

Wymore, NE(Zone 5a)

Wouldn't care for them either! Plus, they last way too long...

Sarasota, FL

Ditto, but I have too.
