A couple interesting begonias

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I saved this begonia from my neglect with just 1 leaf left. I am so glad I did. It is stunning with a turquoise stripe on each leaf point. The leaves are so dark, the stripe really shows.

The leaves are so thick too, The leaf stem is neat too. I have no idea where I got this or what its name is.

And here is a leaf cutting I finally took out if its bag. There were roots coming out all over from the top.

I have no idea what begonia this is either, tag long gone. It has been bagged so all those new leaves formed in bag. I have no clue what came out of the soil to eat it.

It has been out of its bag for 1 hour and the roots are already drying up.

Names never mattered to me. They are looking happy and healthy, that is the point isn't it?

Wild begonia, it just comes up by itself>

Kell,
That first one looks like Heracleifolia.

I think yours might be Begonia grandis, Dale, not that you want to know. LOL. It reseeds all over. Your pic is too small for me to tell.

Thanks Flowerjunkie. Hard to tell with the pictures on PF. The shape is the same but the colors are sure off. Most on PF do not even look variegated. Mine has the prettiest turquoisey stripes down almost black leaves. And the leaves are so thick and heavy. Though it is a hard one to take a pic of. Here is a pic from when I repotted it and brought it inside to live.

Lets see if this helps. This is my photo of it. The pot its is in is 3 gallon pot. The bloom stalks reach about 3 foot above the plant. I think I have a photo of it in bloom...

I just took this one of the spent blooms...coudn't find the one I took when it was full of pink bloom stalks. :-(. But you get an idea of how tall the stalks get if nothing else.

It does have heracleifolia in it. Here is 'Black Falcon' which goes through several different colors over the year.

Well that's kewl.....y'all think it might be the different zones y'all live in?

"eyes"

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That could be Eyes but I think Butch is right in that mine is a relative. My stems are purple like Butche's too. I sure hope mine gets big like yours, Flowerjunkie. I had taken mine out to take its picture in the light and left it out there to burn. I get so mad at myself!

Kell,
Don't worry. It will recover. Just water it well and stick it back in the shade. Mine gets moring sun, but I have a saucer under to because it drinks lots of water. It will get huge soon.

I have been keeping all the begonias I had outside all last year and winter till they were half dead inside on my seedling table under lights. They love it there! The trouble is I have so many other plants on them too, I do not have room for such big plants which these are getting to be.

Kell, could your first photo be 'Palomar Prince'? There are a couple of other "Palomars" out there, they were bred by Michael Kartuz. Check out his catalog (kartuz.com), maybe he will give you a positive ID if you ask him.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks for your suggestion, Wandygirl. I actually have Palomar Prince from a trip to LA area I took 2 years ago. I found it in a gallon can at a nursery. The lady I went with and I went nuts trying to see the begonias first to grab. Competition and lust. LOL We had such fun. Kartuz GH is always a great place to go to. I am so ready for another LA area trip.
