Statement as of 12:50 PM EDT on June 04, 2008
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Tornado Watch for portions of
District of Columbia
western and central Maryland
south central Pennsylvania
northern and central Virginia
eastern West Virginia including the Panhandle
coastal waters
Effective this Wednesday afternoon and evening from 1250 PM until
800 PM EDT.
Tornadoes... hail to 2 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind
gusts to 70 mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these
areas.
The Tornado Watch area is approximately along and 95 statute
miles north and south of a line from 55 miles northwest of
Staunton Virginia to 30 miles north northeast of Patuxent River
Maryland. For a complete depiction of the watch see the
associated watch outline update (wous64 kwns wou7).
Remember... a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for
tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings.
Other watch information... continue... ww 446...
Discussion... band of intense thunderstorms over WV will track
eastward and affect parts of southern PA... western and central
MD... and northern VA this afternoon. Other isolated storms are
likely to form in moist/unstable airmass over central VA. Strong
westerly winds aloft and degree of instability indicate a risk of
supercell storms capable of damaging winds... large hail..and
isolated tornadoes. Bow echo formation is also a possibility with
an associated enhanced risk of damaging winds.
Aviation... tornadoes and a few severe thunderstorms with hail
surface and aloft to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface
wind gusts to 60 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to
450. Mean storm motion vector 27035.

And call our children to bring in ALL the plants on the decks...what fun for them!!!
It just passed over here, starting about five minutes after I wrote the post above. We had some pretty fierce winds for a few minutes but nothing damaging and some hellacious rain and thunder and lightning. I could hear pretty constant thunder rolling to the east after it passed over here.
Oh my - it was just over about 15 minutes ago - it was raining sideways - the house was shaking and I am soaked - had to do a rescue mission on the deck!
OMG WAS I SO excited to have been on the road when THAT hit?!? Was questioning as to whether the van was gonna flip...seriously...those were SOME winds weren't they?!?! Then mad dash into the office which has huge cathedral window all over the one side - yeah, buddy...now that's exciting!!
Everybody ok "out there" - MD sounded like they were getting hitting hard!!! You girls ok up there?
My DH just called - a huge tree fell on a car in the parking lot at his job - fire department is working on it right now - thank goodness no one was in it!
OMG could you imagine??? I'll quit whining about the van "feeling" like it might flip
No no - you are entitled to whine - I am whining away here - as the barometric pressure fell so did my mood and increased my headache
I don't want tornado, but can you send a few sprinkles this way, please
Ahhh Nery - that's what RJ was saying - how dry it is out there...I'm so sorry. Not good either way...we'll see if we can blow some sprinkles your way!!!
Somber and sad news - heard a lady got crushed and killed under a tree in Annandale
SO sad....I can't even imagine. Now they're calling for more possible "weather" tonight...geez. My sis apparently called me at 3AM this morning with tornado warnings...I slept thru it - note to self - turn ringer up on phone...ugh
all you MA pretties, stay in the closet! forget the TV
Great I'm up in Wdbg still and they're saying Tornado watch/warning down in Stafford (home) ... ugh
To quote my DH who just stomped in the door looking completely disgusted - "this weather is stupid" :-)
Gee--had where have I been? I was on my way to get my daughter from youth group las night and saw a vertical cloud edge and thought- hm that must be a good updraft. Sure enuf, within three minutes. pouring. Course the silly kids were getting all wet. Please don't let her be kicked out for being one of the the wild ones LOL!
The newspaper had a picture of a funnel cloud that must have been within two miles of us but no damage here. Power outages near Annapolis.(Cape St Claire)
"Thanks" to the dog amd cat hijinks, my deck is pretty much not plantable these days, anyway, sigh. I have put wicks in t my Adenium and Plumeria and have them under roof.
Very sad about the woman who was killed. Those kind of freak things run through my head when I'm caught in it.
We usually get these thunderstorms on late summer, late afternons, not so much spring, eh? I sued to know cuz I'd be driving and the Baltimore talk radio channel would get staticky. (I suppose they would use telltale clues like 'storm watch' too)
This weather IS stupid.
There were a couple of tornadoes that touched down near here, but we escaped any major damage. One of hubby's colleagues had an oak tree split her house in half, though! Scary stuff.
I was right in the thick of it! I just got out of my appt. and they ushered us into the basement of the building. It took me more than two hours to get home when it usually only takes twenty minutes b/c of closed roads.
I don't know anyone who got hurt, thankfully. I hope every body is okay!
well this was the first time I've ever seen tornado warnings for us! Woke up at my usual, way too early! to find the warnings and tracked the system until 5 AM when a fast moving t-storm hit us but nothing else - whew! I was a nervous "momma" and made sure the cat was inside so all of us could head to the basement if needed. Kind of scary, kept going outside to check - how the heck do you know it's coming when it's pitch black outside? Fortunately nothing happened, only wish we'd got a little more rain out of it all - we basically haven't had any rain since Mother's Day weekend and there are cracks forming in the red clay in the gardens - dare I say it - we might be heading for another drought? I've got so many things I want to get planted, but I'm a little nervous thinking that Mother Nature won't be helping me with watering :(((
we've had all our rain plus all your rain, rcn! yes the transplanted things do appreciate it.
I haven't had to water a thing - but HAVE had to empty water from my potted plants REPEATEDLY - just thinking those jasmines do not want constant wet around them...grrrr
Then there's the 'holy' leaves I have now...to include my Plumies...that hail just beat the tar out of a few things to include a newly opened lily bloom - was NOT happy about that one.
We had high winds and hail the size of quarters last night. Today I have been picking up branches and trash out of the yard.
