I could use some suggestions on what to put in this big pot. I was looking for something with some height to it to use in the center and this little Abutilon 'Savitzii' caught my eye at the nursery. The tag says it grows slower than other Abutilon, so I don't really know what to expect with it. Is it going to grow too slow to really fill out this container this season? I was going to add some pink/purple Torenia for color, and maybe a darker leaved Heuchera, but I wanted something light and bright in there too. And preferably, tallish. Do you think the Abutilon would work, or should I consider something else...I'm open to suggestions. I just really want to get this container planted!
I'm in coastal Maine, and the container is in dappled shade all day until about 2:30- 3:00, when it does get direct sun for the rest of the day.
Abutilon 'Savitzii' or something else?
No suggestion, just comment. Beautiful! Pot and setting!

How about another hosta? Maybe a huge Sum and Substance? Laverne
Thanks, Gaylyn!
Laverne, that hosta to the right of the pot is actually a Sum & Substance sport, "Parhelion"....I have so many hosta in and around this bed that I was trying to break up the hosta-ness a bit....but I haven't ruled them out, because what I went ahead and planted just seems to skimpy looking, somehow. I'll give it a little time to see if evolves, but I may very well go back and revamp it, and add a hosta. Our season is so short up here, and I lack patience!
I did plant the abutilon, but I planted it in a pot within the bigger pot. I'm interested in maybe bringing it indoors thru the winter, so I thought maybe I could do that if I kept it in a smaller, moveable container. I hope it's not terribly slow to grow, because the pics I googled of more mature ones look so pretty.
Canna Pretoria or Tropicana would look great.....tall and showy.....they may not flower much but would sure grow big with lots of food and water......
Maybe an Elephant ear?....so many varieties are out there to choose from
you can get Huechera now in golden and bronzy leafed varieties. They would pick up the dappled light well.

I agree--heuchera would look very pretty, and the flower spikes, while not showy, add height--I have an orange flowering abutilon, purple heuchera, bleeding heart, and vinca in a pot and it is pretty right now
I actually really like the flowers on some Heuchera...I have a couple cultivars that bloom all season, which I love.
I grew a canna last year, and while I wasn't as crazy about the flowers as I wanted to be, the foliage is pretty. If the abuliton doesn't start picking up in the next few weeks I may think about a swap out. I'll try to post an updated pic soon. Thanks for all the suggestions!
purple elephant ears will add some nice contrast
