Cannot find Mock Orange...

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

I have heard so much about the mock orange and how great it smells. However, I called around to all of my nurseries and no one has it. Would it be worth getting online somewhere? It sounds like a great plant and think I would really enjoy it but they are always so expensive online. Also any suggestions on the best ones for my area, 7B?

Thanks.

Bluestone had it http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/search.html?mv_session_id=uVwxYN8f&co=yes&ma=yes&mc=1&tf=name&to=f&rf=*&sp=results_pics&st=db&fi=products&mv_value=nametype%3Dscientific&ml=45&mv_value=srchtype%3Dkey&from_search=1&sf=%3Acode%3Aname%3Acommon_name%3Ashort_desc%3Adescription1&se=Mock+Orange&su=1&op=rm&sf=is_coupon&se=1&su=0&op=ne&sf=disc&se=0&su=0&op=gt&hide=1&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
sadly it appears sold out - but I believe it is something they carry on a regular basis. You might want to contact them about when it'll be back in stock.

This is also listed on DG as having it: http://davesgarden.com/products/ps/go/2727/

And this vendor http://www.nurcar.com./ has a huge assortment of shrubs/trees - I didn't have time to check but I'm sure they'd carry it.

Bluestone isn't shipping anything from now until fall, and they only ship shrubs in the spring so you'll have to wait until next year if you want it from them. Forest Farm carries a number of different ones and they should ship them all year as far as I know.

Here are the listings from Plant Scout of who carries various varieties...sorry I can't be any help on which would do best for you.

Thanks for all your help Chantel and Ecrane. That helps me a lot. I have places to look. Appreciate it.

I bought Philadelphus x lemoinei ‘Innocence’ last spring from Lazy S's.

The price wasn't bad and they carry various different mock oranges. I had heard that it takes a few years for mock orange to bloom but mine bloomed this year. I was surprised.

How pretty!!! What does the scent remind you of?

I took this pix a few minutes ago to be able to show you the varigated foliage. It's really nice. Pretty good for a year-old plant from mail order.

To me the scent is fresh and clean and like sweet oranges. It's really nice. When my hubby sniffs it he usually smiles and says, "Ahhh...all is right in the world". LOL

I have a poor sense of smell and I can smell it easily. I think you'll like it.

I also have a Philadelphus x virginalis Dwarf Minnesota Snowflake that I put in last year from Greer.

Their shipping costs are a little higher. It's a nice plant but didn't flower much this year. I'm guessing it'll take a few years to settle in. It also has that wonderful scent. The leaves are smaller but don't have the varigation. It has a very nice form and I'd like it even if it didn't flower. The flowers are more ruffly (double?).

I have the same cultivar velnita mentioned from Lazy S's. This is its second year in the ground; last year, it was pretty tiny but put out a few flowers, this year it put on quite a show. I've been well pleased with everything I've ordered from them: excellent packing and lovely healthy plants.

I got two different ones from Forest Farms 2 years ago. The larger growing one just bloomed for the first time. The dwarf one with the double flowers had limited blooms last year, but an extraganza of flowers this year. In my experience their plants are always reliable and very well packed in shipping.

Good Gracious Leslie, Two more of the doubles arrived in the mail today from Michigan Bulb. I'd forgotten that I ordered them!!! Mary

Thanks to you all. Sounds like you are enjoying your mock oranges. The pics are beautiful. I will check out those sites to be sure. My nursery tried to sell me something "they" called mock orange but was not in the Philadephus family (I think is right). It was totally different and when I called them on it they said they never get the Philadelphus kind in. Glad I did not buy their plant. I would rather pay mail order and get the right thing.

Thanks again guys and am going to check out the sites right now.

There's also Choisya which often goes by the name Mexican mock orange and Pittosporum tobira which is sometimes called Japanese mock orange--are either of those what they had? Both of those are more readily available here than Philadelphus is so maybe it's the same way in TX. I like the smell of both of those, although I'd make sure and smell them before you buy them to make sure you like them. Pittosporum flowers smell nice but are not as showy, Choisya has showier flowers and I like the smell, but I've heard that people either love the smell or hate it so definitely find one in bloom before you buy it!

good advice ecrane. Thanks. I will look and see if that is something we have here . After reading up on this forum I also asked about Viburnum because that sounded like it smelled so good. Of course the guy at the nursery thought I was talking about verbena. After correcting him he did ask the manager and he said that they used to sell that but it could not be grown here. Something about the soil, the wind and he said the plants were hardy in this zone but they were just burning up. I have had a lot of experience with plants burning up in the Texas sun so I gave up on that one.

I don't have a ton of viburnum experience, but V. carlesii smells fabulous.

Well I broke down and ordered two mock oranges from two different online sites. One I know is "Innocence" and not sure what the other is. One was a pretty good sized plant and the other was about half the size of that one. Guess I have to wait a year or so to get the blooms, huh? Hope it is worth the wait.

Thanks guys.
