Like I need more containers. Bought 4 half barrels. 2 black barrels have a dinner plate dahlias & 2 blue are a mix.
Wooden Half Barrels
lucky u! I was thinking about getting a 1/2 barrel, and putting a vinyl liner in it - create a water garden :-)
Very nice! Love the blue ones, where did you find those?
I have pulled everything out of my wine barrel in my front yard and need something that will stand up to the high winds that often blow here. The barrel sits on a small triangular bed of river rock with a large crimson tee tree behind it. I want something bright and pretty good sized but not so tall that the wind will destroy it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
I'm not familiar with your growing seasons and what would do well this time of year. Perhaps take a look at some of the plantings around commercial/business properties. Often a professional horticulturist has put together a long lasting display that is exposed to all the elements. If it works there, should be fine in your yard. Also check: www.provenwinners.com
They will have example & container recipes for Fall Planters.
Here's my barrels now, months later.
Beautiful barrels, Jo!!
Wow! Your yard is gorgeous, would love to have you as a neighbor.
Thanks youngershirl. I have become a bit obsessive with the whole gardening thing and actually expanded my flowerbeds on the the neighbor's property. The picture of the side yard is one example. The cropped up spruce trees are my neighbor's trees. When we moved in 9 years ago, the spruce branches made it impossible to get into the back yard and all that was under them was dried spruce needles and gravel. I reseed grass under them every year or 2. I'm expecting a new greenhouse to be delivered any day. (12' x 8'). Very exciting. I start a lot of my plants from seed, especially petunias. I have already decided my next year's little fun project. Last May I planted a ball of succulents. Next year, I'm going to do a wire window box in succulents, side, bottom & top planted and hang it above my back door to the house. There is fairly large overhang, so the succulents will be able to handle the lack of rain. Here's the ball, brought it in the house, since we have had a few hard frosts and I'm not quite ready to winterize it yet.
Joannabanana, where did you find the ball to grow the succulents in?? That is fantastic!
I made/planted it. 2 half wire baskets attached together to form the ball.
Brilliant! I think I need to make one. What do you have them growing in? Gosh that is really great.
The baskets are lined with sphagnum moss with potting mix. It works best to plant the two half separately, allow a couple of weeks to root in and then attach the 2 halves together. I used the little plastic zip ties to hold it together. If you have a plant that needs to be braced in longer, a landscape fabric staple works great. We have a post in the Canadian Forum that have some pictures of other DG local members that attended a fun little workshop in my garage making these last June (it poured rain for weeks so we set up in the garage).
My plan for next year is to plant a wire window box with the moss and succulents to hang over my back door of the house. There is a large overhang and receives full south sun, so the drought tolerant plants should do fine. I think it will look cool and the succulents seem to be fine side planted and even bottom planted in these type of baskets.

Thanks Joannabanana,
I really appreciate the instructions. The ball is stunning. A wire window box will look awesome. It definetly makes you look twice and then somemore. I am really excited.
Good luck with the wire box planter, I would love an update when you have it finished.
