brown pond muck

What is the deal with the brown 'stuff' on the rocks in the pond? I have a clarifier and the water is clear. But the rocks are nasty brown. I used the pressure washer and cleaned up the pond and drained most last week and the brown stuff is right back on the rock. I have a few small fish in my small pond but how do I get rid of this brown stuff on the rock? I can turn a rock over and it's clean -

Hi Kathy,
I'm not sure, but doesn't the clarifier make all the "stuff" in the water clump together and sink. Maybe it keeps clumping and landing on the rocks. Just a thought.

Edited to say that I put quilting batting in my skimmer and pull out all kinds of nasty brown stuff about every 3 days or so. I use it as filter material. After 3 days I hang it on the fence and quirt all the brown out and then put it right back in the skimmer. Works great.

What a great idea. I bet that's exactly what I need to do. I don't have a skimmer. I have a pondless waterfall system. The basin holds about 550 gallons but has heavy plastic barrels in the bottom with large holes drilled so it's basically a shell vs. barrel. Small rock on top. The skimmer keeps water clear but the rocks are another issue. I will probably just put a fish aquarium filter at the entrance to the water fall to catch the muck. That may work.
