A coworker gave me a strawberry planter she made. It has 5 side pockets and I'd like to fill it with some more orderly herbs. In the top, I've already planted borage, but I don't have too many ideas outside of thyme and some dwarf strawberries for the side pockets and could use some suggestions. I'm basically looking to fill it with edible herbs/berries/vegetables, etc...
Looking for some ideas for a strawberry planter.
Hi. I don.t know how big the planter is but it must be a really good size to accommodate borage. You could try chives, sage, basil - purple basil is really attractive, some different kinds of oregano like hot and spicy, or even one of the lower growing parsley's. Nasturtium is great in salads and could add a nice color in their flower if you wanted color. There are the winter and the summer savory that could be used. You would have to pick the plants continually, especially summer savory, as they can get quite straggly. Hope these suggestions help some.
Thanks for the suggestions. The pot is 24" tall and a 24" diameter at the top. The side pockets are 4-6" each.
There are dwarf herbs which might work well in the pockets: dwarf sage, dwarf chives, dwarf lemon balm. Alpine strawberries would work well. Perhaps lemon thyme. Lemon savory is really good.
I've got one planted now with creeping (trailing) thymes and nasturtiums -- pretty!
That's a big top opening... you could put a larger plant like a french thyme, maybe even a small sage or rosemary at the top, or a group of taller basil varieties, or even a hot pepper plant.
