Hi! I grew this hibiscus from seed 3 years ago, and it needs pruning badly. I just have no idea on how to do it! I would think I could root some of the cuttings . . . any suggestions?
Help on pruning
That is a hardy Rose of Sharon and it's cuttings should root very easily. Spring, before they leaf out is usually the best time to prune but I don't think you will hurt it by cutting it back now. I would not take off too much now but you can certainly shape it and keep the new growth pinched so it won't get out of hand.
Great! Thanks for your help!
Doing the 1/3 rule should help too - i.e. cut one 3rd of the plant then when it re-generates cut another & so on - since cutting at this late time may not produce blooms (or as many blooms) on the newly cut wood.
Thank you for your input . . . I still haven't gotten the nerve to cut it yet . . .
