Somewhere I read about the power of a scarecrow (to help in hawk damage) as long as it is moved regularly. Does anyone have ideas about building one which would withstand wind, rain, etc and also be fairly easy to move. I have some thoughts but think I might be trying to make this more of a problem than it has to be. Our soil has lots of clay so it is not easy to push anything into the ground to stabilize it. I don't know that I will ever give my chickens free range although the plan is to let them get a little older and then maybe. Thanks for any help I can get. Geeze
Need ideas for building a scarecrow.
Geeze, are your chicks in a pen? Mine are and I hang my scarecrow on the fence posts around the pen. All I have been using is an old shirt sewn onto an old pair of pants with a wire hanger in the shirt (like you would use to hang it in the closet) with the hook closed up enough to make sure it won't come off the nail it is fastened to. Just hook the hook on the nail that is at the top of the fence posts.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi GG. I, too, am GG and thus - Geeze (two g's).
We do have our chickens in an 8 x 8 pen which is covered with wire and attached to their chicken house. So, today they are very safe but we may have plans to allow them free range in the future. We do have 2 GSD's which allow our neighbor's 50+ guineas to come within a few feet of them. Both of our dogs are bored with these birds and pay them absolutely no attention. One of the dogs does seem more interested in our chickens which are inside fencing.
We are considering letting the chickens into a fenced-in garden before free range and I will also be needing help about that, too, and will start another topic. Thanks so much to you for your time and interest. Geeze (also GG)
Dave's should start a scarecrow forum ..lol
I make scarecrows from all sorts of things.
They don't always work to scare unwanted birds away, but always fun (((-:
