Steller's Jay help

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

hi. My yard has been taken over by a steller's jay family. They were invited but now i am wondering if i have created a monster. Do they eat fresh sweet pea and bougainvillea's sprouts? They hang out in those plants and are either eating the buds or eating the thing that's eating the buds. I am good at critter spotting and don't see a thing they could be eating. Boy are they loud and demanding, they have captured my heart, but not at the expense of my flowers!!!! Any ideas ? Thanks
Anne

Hi BA, Can you put some food out like peanuts? That might make them leave the plants but it can get expensive. Also sunflower seeds.

Hi, This is what it says at Cornell.

Arthropods, acorns, nuts, fruits, seeds, and small vertebrates.

Hi Pell
Yes, thats why i am perplexed. Could fresh flower sprouts be considered 'fruit' for birds?

Since I don't have Stellers Jays I can't say from experience. I have seen some birds here eating flower buds on trees but thats all.

Oooo, ask Adelbercat. he has tons of stellers.

Maybe they were drinking some nectar.
