Looooong internodes

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

I've noticed the internodes on several of my hoyas have been getting longer. Does anyone know what causes this? Below, H. lacunosa. I was wondering if it's from the MSU fertilizer I recently started using, which has really spurred my hoyas into action (and produced more blooms on my H. kerrii than I've ever had before!).

I'm probably way off base but I always thought that was caused by lack of light.

Hmmm...well it's in a western window where it gets bright light most of the day and direct light in the late afternoon...I was wondering if it was from the fertilizer boost.

Maybe, faster growth=more space between leaves

Julia, I really don't know much, but I use MSU too and my H. lacunosa looks like that. My carnosa, pubicalyx and australis also have longer internodes. I've been using it since last summer.

Interesting, Lourdes! Hmmm. This lacunosa truly looked like a wax plant, i.e., it didn't move or grow, until I started using MSU, when it started vining out like crazy.

Julia, I'm also getting flowers in some of them for the first time. This is the lacunosa

That's interesting Lourdes, you do seem to have the same phenomenon happening.

The last photo is "red buttons," no? gorgeous!

Julia, I honestly think that it has to do with the fertilizer, I thought it was "normal" since I started with the hoyas not that long ago. We'll have to wait to see what other memers say.

As for the flower, I'm not sure, I got it as pubicalyx unknown ...I think it's a royal hawaiian purple just because of the color of the buds before they opened. So I'd love to know for sure what I have.

Wow, Lourdes, the color of those buds is really an intense purple. Beautiful!

Thank you Mark! ... do you know if it's "royal hawaiian purple" or "red buttons"?

Not yet. Once it opens someone can probably id it.
Marcy Durst has all of the pubicalyx cultivars, I think, she should recognize it.

Mark,
I posted the open flower before the pictures of the buds, sorry I was trying to show how it looked before opening.

I'll wait to see if someone can tell me for sure what it is.
Thank you.

Oh, didn't see that! It looks like 'Red Buttons' maybe? RHP usually has a mix of colors in the flowers, 'Red Buttons' is usually uniformly dark purple/black with red coronas.

One of the big differences I am aware of is the RHP has larger leaves than RB...and Marcy has a clone of RHP with a lot of speckeling on the leaves...very silvery....

Nice growing Lourdes!!!! En hora buena!

Our very own Christina has one of the BEST websites around for hoyas....here is her section of 'P' hoyas...with photos of both RHP and RB.... http://www.myhoyas.com/hoya%20album%20P.htm

Ah, I should really start reading the threads before I post onto them! Julia already suggested 'Red Buttons'.

Thank you Carol and Mark. The leaves are very dark and big with a lot of silver speckles., comparing them to the other two pubicalyx that I have.

I'm very happy, this is the first bloom for this plant. I guess MSU really helps!
