Puddles' and Aflac's new game

Fort Worth, TX

My duckies have started a new game and I don't know what to think of it. It's funny to watch but I don't know if it means anything. One will dive under water and come up under the other. They both do it and it's funny to watch. Aflac ran Puddles out of the pool by spreading her wings and splashing a lot. Should I be concerned? Here's a pic taken today while my son was filling their pool. They were waiting impatiently.

I love them! I think it sounds like they are having fun--with maybe just a little "pecking order" thrown in.

They would probably quack at you till you got out like they did to my son. LOL

They're just having a lot of fun! I got a pool like yours set up today and there was tons of splashing, diving and chasing going on. I could almost hear them giggling. I dug out the sod below my pool. Used the sod to make a ramp all the way around inside. Put a cinder block in the water in case anyone needed a leg up. No problems though.

They go nuts for water don't they. I put my aflak (with a K) in the tub today and he just went to town!! Enjoy your duckies : )

This morning Hanzel was showing off. He was doing backflips in the water and scared Gretel a bit. The Quaker Brothers ran from the pool and gave him all the space he needed. They stood in awe watching his flips and dives LOL

wish i had my camera this morning. before we left to get water, i had Sam run the hose in the dip in the road for the ducks. i stop on the way out to turn it off, and all are enjoying it EXCEPT the two babies.... so i went and found where Olive left them, and took them over.

the first one buzzed out about 8 feet in two seconds! and the second one zoomed across even faster, and these are TREE/PUDDLE ducks LOL.... it was like those toy cars you get in the cereal boxes, where you pull back over and over, then let go and they just take off lightning fast! what a joy! and before i put them in, i let the boys take turns holding them. the boy that slept over REALLY loved that!

I got some pictures yesterday but I'm waiting for Paul to wake up and get them off the camera for me. Poor man didn't get in from work till 5 am.

Your ducks are just darling! I have two ducks, also, one a mallard and one a runner duck, Costello and Abbot, but the runner duck won't get in the pool! He will stand on the side and duck his head under the water, but no matter how many different kind of ramps I've tried, he just won't go in!

Beth I think runner ducks don't swim!

OH! That would explain it! I didn't know what kind of ducklings I was picking out - they were all mixed in together at the feed store.

A duck that doesn't swim? Wow, I never would have guessed. LOL! Thanks Molly!

Beth there is an association for them with a lot of info at

Puddles is a Runner and she swims, right underneath Aflac. LOL

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

maybe it's cause you named her PUddles, so she is confused?

I wonder if some runners do and others don't? Maybe it varies by what kind of runner they are?

All I know is my Cayugas would stay in the water 24/7 if I let them! So would my geese.

btw how friendly will adult geese be to new geese (once they're big enough to join the flock). Would they chase the newcommers away or accept them? I was thinking of adding a few more next year.

That could be it, tf, she loves the water though and she'll beat anyone to the pool. LOL
