Quiz: Do you know plants

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

There are 12 plants in this picture. Of course, some are farther away. The couple that have bloomed are no brainers, but can you tell a plant by it's foliage? If you get the small hard to see one's you are excellent. I think 5 is good. The 3 in front of the purple one count as one, as they are the same plant. By the way, if they weren't mine I would have gotton maybe 3 lol. Luckily the sun is finally supposed to shine, if you are too busy in your garden to do this, I say finally, thank God for the sun.

Vicky. the one in front of the purple bush, is that not a Cornflower, Montana ?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

well, I'm sure I'm way off... but I'll give a few of them a shot. the one to the left of the pink rhody is maybe a rosebush or a rose relative. then the Rhododendron might be "pink petticoats" or "dwarf pink", but who knows.... there's a lot of pink rhody's! then to the right of the is maybe an Aster, possibly latiflorous prince or lady in black. behind that, can't tell as it's hard to see in the photo... maybe a dianthus. then there's the purple aster or mum? It seems too early though for those. The tree behind that, way to far away to tell anything for certain though, sort of looks like a flowering cherry or apricot. To the right of that looks like possibly on of those ornamental artichokes.

Redchic - you are too brave!! I couldn't even hazard a guess at this distance. The eyes are not what they used to be. It'll be fun to see how close you get.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I have no idea! i'm not sure if I'm going to be worried or embarrassed! :-p

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ahhh come on Katie..... Be brave and give it a shot!!!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Well, I agree with you on the rhody and the rose and the artichoke or cardoon in front. The three plants coming up together in front of the large shrub might be liatris. Don't really have an idea about the others.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Liatris sounds like a good guess. I have really been scratching my head on those!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Well I have some that are trying to come up right now, but the slugs here (and I grow them big) have been ahead of me.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I must say Redchic, I am amazed, but not surprised. What is the purple bush though? It is about 3 1/2 to 4 feet across and the same wide. katie59 you provided a little help. Katie, Sluggo, slug bait has been proven not to harm other animals or kids and they go away to die. It's the only kind I use. Will post the answers early this afternoon.

wow Vicki, you're a night owl too! I would have to see a closer picture of the purple bush thing to maybe figure out what that is. Strangely enough it grows like my candytuft does, but i've only seen that in a white flower (i've heard rumors that purple might exist!). It also sort of looks like a purple Ice plant, delosperma. that should grow to be a big plant in zone 8. Hmmmm.... ok.... you've gotta give us some closer shots! i'm beginning to feel like a dog chasing my own tail! :-p

Ok red,
Closer pics are coming, and if you are up to the challange, I happen to have a few in my backyard too. I will probably send them straight to your D mail. I don't want to take up room on here for something not a lot of people are interested in. When I show you a close up of the purple, I think you will know what it is immediately. It's hard to get closer pics since you can only post 1 per thread. Would you mind giving me your direct email and I can send you close ones of the purple and the several in my back-yard at one time. A couple of these in the back might stump you, but you are very good, so maybe not.

You can definitely send them direct to my d-mail if you want to. I like a good game!! But, I actually think that more folks will want to give it a shot if they can see the plants better!! At least it seems like that's usually the case. Actually, if it doesn't get much interest for some reason, I'll see if I can get some folks from one of the other forums that I like to hang out on to check it out, I bet you'll get a lot more responses!!! You can post as many pics as you like in this thread, unfortunately it does have to be one at a time, but it is a really common thing to do! Just start posting away with pics when you reply to this one and take up as many replys as you want!!!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

I think everyone gets a kick out of seeing them and guessing (even if they don't post their guesses!).

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

ok guys here they are, purple bush 1st. A couple of them are closer shots of yesterday's. I'll post this with purple one then the next 7 will just be pics. I'll put answers this evening, but I don't think you will need me to tell you most of them. It's so crappy out today, can't believe it's june 1. Might as well do little quiz.

oooooh. I'm going to have fun looking at these when I get off work!!!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hm, the last one is Polemonium Brise D'Anjou, before that, let's see, butterfly bush, Buddlieie Davidii,

The front yard Purple one looks like Verbena to me, it doesn't seem quite tall enough to be Erysimum Bowles Mauve, then two Mums, then, as we all suspected, a Dianthus, which is next to what looks to me like some variety of Shasta Daisy. Then, for the new ones in the front yard, there's a Winky Rose Columbine (or Aquilegia) next to a Garden Phlox.

The back yard has the Centaurea Montana like Til's
Next picture has an Astilbe and one that looks familiar but I'm not sure about.

The next picture has the edge of a Hydrangea and what looks like a Penstemon

Not sure what the next one is.

Then, I'm back to where I started....

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

My guess is the first is a verbena like a Tapien or Temari. When I first saw your first post I guessed to myself Bowles Mauve ersysimum but seeing the close up I now think some sort of perenniel verbena looking at the leaves and bloom.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

The second photo looks like some sort of chrysanthemum.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

The third photo with the little pink bloom is maybe a dianthus and the larger green plant maybe is perenniel aster.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

The front yard photos look like a columbine and maybe a tall phlox.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Is the next one, the first backyard photo one of those perenniel lobelias that bloom red?

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

The next continued photo looks like an astilbe and that same lobelia.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

The next photo is Liatris or gayfeather?

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Your favorite is a butterfly bush or buddlei.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Your last is Jacob's Ladder or polemium, that new variegated variety, Brise d'Anjou.

Sorry so many posts but I looked at each enlargement individually and then made my guess.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Dang Susybell and Lenjo, You two pretty much summed it all up I think! I'm so glad someone finally named that verbena. I've seen the plant plenty of times before, but I'm not real familiar with it and I would've driven myself crazy with it until I thumbed through a reference book until I found it. So, I'm glad I don't need to do that now!!!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

You guys are amazing, for the most part almost everyone was correct. Lenjo execellent, except in the continue picture that is an astilbe, (one I thought I killed last summer) but next to it is a Bee Balm.

1. Verbena Homestead
2 Mums
3 Aster and Dianthus
4 Columbine (Winky Mix) and Garden Phlox (David)
5 Lobelia Cardinalis
6 Bee Balm on the right, Astilbe on the left
7 Penstemon (Goat's Beard)
8 Liatris or Gayfeather
9 Butterfly Bush Purple Nanjo
10 Jacob's ladder

Thanks everyone and no wonder I come to you guys for my gardening questions.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

it was a good day! Do you have another quiz? that was fun..... probably because I didn't do most of the work! :-p
