Black Magic and Midnight

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

How do you tell the difference between these two?

I would say Col. midnight is very dark and slightly velvety it is also very weak and not as attractive in my book. I can rarely get it to hold more than 3 leaves at a time and usually 3 to 4 feet tall. It is also a bit unstable and can get green blotches. Black magic can get up to 7 feet and has very large leaves it forms clumps. I find that finding the true black magic is much more difficult sense most of the TC places get it mixed up with Black runner which is a totally different creature.

Can you tell from this picture?

I forgot to say. The top two leaves are new ones so they are still some what green. All leaves from this plant start green.

ps. I think I have a lizzard eating my leaves.

This looks to be the true black magic off hand. The midnight AKA jet black wonder are very weak plants. I am amazed they ever made it to the market they never preform well for me. Here is a photo of the plant. I am guessing it would make a much better plant in a tropical climate were most Colocasias are weeds this being slower and easier to contain.

Mine look just like that when the leaves get a few weeks age on them in full sun. Is your picture of a Balack magic or Midnight? I wasn't sure from you text but I assumed it was a Midnight.
