If you've grown this ______, is it invasive?

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

This plant I have----PF says it can be invasive. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57891/ What's your view on it before I stick it in the ground!??!!?!

Should I plant it in the ground in a pot?

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

And likewise, if you HAVE grown this, would you please add your zip code report to PF?

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I've grown it in the past--it liked the shade. definitely wasn't invasive for me, it froze one winter about 3 years ago. I just wasn't crazy enough about it to replace it--I notice its everywhere this year at big box stores and HGC.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

LOL, yep, that's where I found it. Thinking I may go ahead and put it in a pot in the ground just in case. But you're the second to tell me it's not survived a winter so we'll see. :)

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

mine was in the shade on the back patio in a big pot--I think they are really easy to root, must be since they are everywhere now, but I never tried

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

mine was in the shade in a pot on the back deck. It didn't last through the winter and didn't come back.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Oh man. I'm disappointed on this. Have ya'll added comments to PF on that?

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

It is widely grown here, blooms fall to early summer. I have never seen it spread and it is not invasive. I don't use it because it needs to be sheared or replaced for summer and I prefer plants that are 'self-cleaning'.

Oh thanks for the pic dale! Have you posted that in PF to? I hope so, it's a great one!!!! :)

Good to know----so I need "self cleaning" plants myself since I don't have as much time to get out there as I'd like.

Dale it's obvious you are an accomplished gardener! I love the clean look to your beds there! GORGEOUS! I know I to let my membership lapse for a time, resubscribed just to look up things on PF's but I'm not to good at navigating them. Still.....for $20 a year I enjoy talking to so many good folks. :)

Thank you for the plant comparisons. I find Dave's is still nicer viewing than Wicpedia.

I write off the $20 per year for chatting as important for a sahm who doesn't get out much ;).

Being a Mom at home is good...

I just realized (ohh I am so slow) that I don't have one digital photo of Texas, and I lived there for over 13 years...oh well, next time I am there is will shoot some.

Oh no complaints here----other than you really need the adult conversation!!!!!!!!!

What part of Texas? We've lived lots of places as well but I always try to soak up as much of each area as I can while there.

Austin, went to UT for a couple years. Lived in Brownsville, but, that is not the best town for jobs (& fun). Built a little cabin out on the Colorado near Smithville. Dripping Springs and Lake Travis too. Mostly in east Austin.

I know what you mean about the need to exercise the brain. Is your little girl fluent in any foreign languages yet? Other than Babble.

Not all the photos I post are of places I have worked>

Will be sorry to see you leave dale . . . love all your photos and postings!!!! Wish you'd reconsider.

dale you said that plant isn't invasive to your knowledge but the beds they are planted in are quite thick of them, wondering did they just plant a ton of them or did it expand?

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

They planted a ton of them and they do expand. If you stare at the photo you will see the space between them, not easily, but it is still noticeable.

I like to use torenia hybrids instead, since we are mostly frost free they are perennial here. They will not take a hard freeze.

Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' is not invasive as are some other members of this genus. Mine have died during hard freezes so I keep them in a container and protect them in the winter. I never sheared mine in order to keep them blooming.

Ummm.. not to start an argument or anything, but where on earth did you get $5.6 million, Dale? According to this week's newsletter, we have 7,723 paid subscribers. That makes $154,460 per year - out of which Dave and Terry's salaries are paid and the rest goes to NameMedia.

Quoting:
where on earth did you get $5.6 million, Dale?

The member who posted that made a mistake, assuming that everybody who has a (free) username has paid the subscription cost. This member then spreads that around to make us look like selfish beasts who are rolling in millions of dollars, when nothing could be further from the truth. Judging by their other posts, they have clearly become unhappy with DG and are aiming to soil our good name as best as they can on the way out.

Just trying to explain things as I see them.

Ah, good points Dave and Marylyn----I was wondering myself but didn't do the legwork to check the open-for-reading newsletter!

I find the subscript fee a priority for myself. :) So glad ya'll posted the facts.

Hey dale, here's the newsletter. It's not "mailed" to everyone, only if you sign up, but it is always available with the stats on Dave's. Check under "extras."
