Shipping Help Please

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi,
I am going to be sending out a few plants and cuttings and want to know is it alright to package today and ship tomorrow or do you all do it that day? Will it hurt the plants....
Thanks,
Susan

Packing the day before is fine. It's generally better to pack them a day or two after watering to avoid excess water - you could also sit the pots on paper towels to absorb excess water. Extra water can move through packing materials and reach the leaves and crown and cause rot. While in the box, there is no evaporation and the plant won't be using much water because there is no light. HTH.

I should note that the "too much water" issue depends on how you pack, of course. I wrap the pot and soil in plastic, so there really is very little water evaporation/ usage while in transit.

It takes care to pack potted plants, and it always takes me more time than I think. That's why I rarely ship plants in pots these days - just tubers, seeds, cuttings and rhizomes. More propagation practice for everyone! j/k.

Receiving plants is nicer though, so I'm sure your packages will be much appreciated.

i ship many out of the pot, they seem to travel better.

Susan you are a great packer..unfortunately,no one can control the way the post office handles packages..I remember..I think it was Brenda? said awhile back a box she got from Daves Violets I believe looked like the mailman threw it off the truck and let it bounce around on the ground...totally uncalled for but totally out of our hands..all we can do when we mail is hope the po workers are in a nice mood..lol...

Well I hope they don't run these over as it gets me upset when my plants or cuttings just look like crap and/or die...LOL

Many sinningias are especially tricky to ship in pot - those stems snap very easily. I am always including instructions for Sinn newbies to root the broken stem AND keep the tuber. On the other hand, it's so easy to ship a just-sprouted tuber - there's something serene about it. LOL.

keyring;
when i ship my sinns,i take them out of the pot then i put them in a zip lock bag & fold it & then staple it so it can not move in the bag. this is for most sinns, of course not the big sinns.they ship so much better & hardly ever have broken stems.

I also find they are easier to ship out of pot.
