(Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub)
Okay...I got this upon Carol and Mark's recommendation ($33 - whoa!) that it really kills mealies dead and now need to know how much to add to a gallon. I can't find this information anywhere on the label, for some reason. Help, please! How do you guys apply?
gracias,
Julia
Question about BATS
Julia,
It is one ounce per gallon. I weigh mine on a digital kitchen scale so I don't know what the tablespoon measurement is. I'm wondering if I need to buy mine fresh every year or will last years still work fine. If anyone knows please chime in.
Doug
Doug, one oz. is 2 tblesp. I find it lasts in the bottle, undiluted, for years.
So, 2 tablespoons per gallon. Thanks! Cant' believe it lasts for a whole 12 months! The real test is on my Hindu rope....which seems to be a mealie bug resort at the moment.
Julia...when you apply it...it works really well to sit the plant in a deep dish and let the water with the BATS run thru it and sit in it for a while...to totally absorb the BATS. I usually also put in some fert. with the solution to save on the next job!!!
Thank you so very much Julia for asking and Doug and Carol for the information. I've been having trouble with mealies and was using insecticidal soap. They go away for a little bit, but always come back. No clue as for how I got them I always quarantine the new plants/cuttings and did not see anything until too late =(
I'm going to get it right now.
Thank you for all your help, with you guys; I learn something new every single day.
Gracias!
I really think that BATS is a great product. I actually used it this year for one of its on label purposes, and my two Weeping Larches are looking incredible; it stoped the insects that were plaguing it last year in their tracks.
As a side note the price for BATS in VT at HD, Wal*mart, and Lowes is $24.95 for 32 oz. I guess everything in CA from real estate to insecticide is more expensive, probably even more so in Hawaii.
Doug
I was shocked at my 27$ price on the BATS!!!!
Well, I bought it at a chichi nursery in SF - I'm sure that was the mark-up cost. I was a bit wary reading it was "for outside use only," but since I was told by folks here that it's the same chemical used in flea collars, I figure I'll give it a try. My toddler is past the oral stage, thank goodness.
Julia
Ok I got it, just one question and please be patient with me. I got the one that says for trees& shrubs. They also had one that said for roses, flowers and shrubs that is systematic, I was tempted to get that one, but remembered that you said trees and shrubs. This one says 12 months protection but it's not systematic.
Did I get the right one?
They had different sizes, but the one I got was $19.99 for a 32 oz.
Label says outside use only and do not spray, do I disregard that? Can I spay them or only water them with the solution?
Thank you sooooooooooooo very much.
Lourdes
Lourdes... I remember it is very confusing. The one for Roses and flowers is a spray, and it is supposed to be systemic. You got the correct one...BayerAdvancedTreeandShrub. It is not supposed to be sprayed, but poured into the soil (drenched). It does not smell, won't hurt anything, won't make your hair curly and won't take the varnish off your floors!!! Gosh...what a great price!!!!!
Thank you Carol, I'll do it with the fertilizer like you said.
Thank you very, very much!
I'd go lightly on adding the fertilizer as BATS already has some fertilizer in it if I remember right. I know my plants always pick up & do better right after I use the stuff, so I figure whatever fertilizer is in it they LOVE it. Ha. I never add anything else to it when I use it to avoid over doing it, and also avoid watering with anything else for a while after.

Marcy
Thank you Marcy.
One more question, since some have the mealies and some don't ( I hope) but all are in the same room, do I use it in all or just in the ones that I know for sure that are infested?
I used it this morning for my H. bella, I drenched it like Carol told me.
Thank you
"Good for the Goose Good for the Gander" - I do all of my hoyas at the same time, all of them that have been in the same area as those affected... Good insurance!!!
I only used it on the plants that perennially suffer from the mealie plague: my carnosas and pubicalyx cultivars...oh, and australis.
Thank you Carol, I'll do that.
I have a couple of questions again. How many times do I need to apply BATS and how long do I wait in between? Also do I apply if they are blooming? I have a couple that are in bloom.
Thank you and sorry to bother so much.
Lourdes
I use BATS also and I got mine at Wal Mart for under $20. which was about $10. less than at the Nursery I checked at.
My carnosa's and compacta seem to be the worst at getting mealies & I also use it on my Epi's for scale.
Jo
It really does last for a year. Longer, actually. Some of the roses I treated with it last year still show no sign of aphids or rose slug, and none of my Hoya have a single mealybug, and I treated them last about a year an a half ago.
Julia, it works great on compacta, but you will have to blast the plant with a hose to get all of the mealy carcasses out.
Lourdes, it doesn't matter if the are flowering.
I like to water it in when the soil is dry- it really soaks it up, which I guess makes it more cost effective (no run-off).
Thank you Mark.
Also Lourdes, I've heard that BATS doesn't get cycled through the peduncles and flowers, so check your flowers to make sure there are no mealies on them. If you find any, you'll have to remove them manually.
Jen
OR....you can spray the mealies with straight rubbing alcohol which will zap them and not hurt the plant.
Thank you Jen and Carol, I checked the flowers and I can't see the mealies or the "white stuff" so I guess so far so good.
I really appreciate all the advise.
Thank you!
